Les Girls by Sophie Appleby
‘Les Girls’ is the first in a series of experimental textile collages that dances between the worlds of literature and art. This artwork is an English book with a new French title collaged with fabric, images for the novel ‘Les Girls’, vintage lace and buttons, a 1920’s American postcard, hand embroidery and typewriter lettering on cotton. The collage has been sewn onto 100% cotton and adhered onto a 1950’s hard cover novel ‘Dance and Skylark’. The book itself remains in its original condition, with sepia tone pages and is 7.5×5 inches.

The Omniscient by Susan Kimball
I created this transfer collage on watercolor paper to express the peace I feel when I tune into my Divine guidance. Through the deep pain of powerlessness watching the death of a loved one, I began to see what is really important in life. Much about life had been hidden from me because I wasn’t ready to have the deeper secrets revealed to me. “The Omniscient” is an attribute of Allah which means the “All-knowing”. We aren’t meant to know what we don’t know. But the more willing I am to go inside into my heart and to listen with a different ear, I begin catch a glimpse of the undefinable. It is a journey of a lifetime, for me like creating art-an intuitive, spiritual, creative expression from the heart. I get excited about the “Unseen”. I get excited about the mystical experience of losing myself in the music of the soul as I walk on my Sufi path.

Torches Together by sarah e. melville
A spread from the altered book I made for mewithoutYou. I illustrated each song from their album “Catch For Us The Foxes”; this is “Torches Together”. The lyric illustrated is “you played the flute, but no one was dancing!”. This is the first page I did, as it is the first track of the album. I believe this one dates back to 2005. The writing is the Elder Futhark of Norse Runes (there are some errors, as I was just learning it).

The Choice by Diana Maus
It’s not unusual for an artist to be influenced by poetry. Poetry is truth exposed— eloquently and succinctly. Sometimes it seems like my personal truth, but as it turns out, my truth is universal. This piece was inspired by the poet Wislawa Szymborska. / http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/literature/laureates/1996/szymborska-poetry.html / In the poem “COULD HAVE”, / http://www.english.upenn.edu/~traister/szymborska.html / Szymborska writes about destiny/fate/chance/luck and, most fortunately, reprieve. I read this poem many times and eventually realized that I didn’t really have The Choice to decide my fate after my mother’s death at a young age. “As a result”, “because”, “although” and “despite” played the larger role. The “Chest” of drawers is a metaphor for my mother’s chest (and heart). Once upon a time, there seemed no separation between hers and mine. The four drawers state my truths: As a result of circumstances at the time / Because I had to go on / Although it wasn’t what I wanted, and / Despite all evidence to the contrary I chose. Or did I?

We aRe wHat we Eat..........sculpture on collarge by aRae
below is a wee article found in the paper…THIS IS FOR THOSE THAT DIDNT READ IT….......... Fish poisoned by pool treatment / A chemical which poisoned fish in a Highland river has been identified as one used for treating swimming pools. / Workers at the Conon Salmon Fisheries Board raised the alarm after finding a large number of dead salmon and trout in the Alness River on Monday morning. The dead fish were found near Inchlumpie, Ardross. Northern Constabulary said on Thursday that analysis of water taken from the river has revealed the chemical to be sodium hypochlorite. Fully dispersed Police said it has several uses including treating water for use in swimming pools. The force said it believed the chemical has now fully dispersed and does not pose a risk to anyone using the river. However, the full environmental impact was still being investigated by police and Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa). Police added that the effects on any fish taken from the river were not yet known and strongly advised that anyone receiving salmon or trout from anywhere other than a reputable source should not eat the fish. We aRe wHat we Eat was featured in the group “The Art of Intrigue”

2009 The " Time to listen" ...(ice sculpture with alarming contents) by aRae
i made this frozen ice sculpture of a Buddha..within it is an alarm clock…..as an artsit i explore, messages, religions, i respond as i do / ......................................................................................................................................................................................................... the following is an extract from Moh Hong Buddhist Shrine and its the part of the 2009 Chairman’s Message.. “Of course, the vision is always perfect 20/20 in hindsight. While I can sit here like many others and wag my disapproving finger at the US and financial institutions for causing this unnecessary pain on the global economy, it really serves no purpose. What is the outlook? Where is the bottom? / Do we really know? Does it matter? Probably not. From the principle of relativity and impermanence, we know that physical experiences and events are often shaped by our personal mental construct and such experiences and event will change as surely as the sun will rise on the east tomorrow. So why get overtly hung up about where things are heading? While it helps to plan ahead, we should also not live our life only thinking or fearing the future and miss out smelling the roses right in front of you. As we enter the new year with a sour taste on our tongue, hopefully not from too much jollying over the past weeks, we need to reflect on the present and remain calm on what‘s to come. Present moment, wonderful moment. Cherish the present experiences with a learned and balanced mind. Go forth and prepare the future but go with an understanding of the basic Buddhist principles and not get trapped in that anticipation.” if you copy and paste this link you can read the complete message:: http://mohhong.org/2009/01/02/2009-chairmans-message/ Featured in the group Surrealism

D'Oro Porcelainyo by Melanie Dooley
Taking a break from digital manipulation to make things in 3D. This is an assemblage piece, set into a window box. It comprises: 100 year old porcelain doll, metallic bits and pieces (brass stampings, filigree, chain), papers and German embosed foil, rusty metal bits (vines), glass hearts, lots of glue. Decorated with gold wax and gold paint. Here is a close up of the inside, which is somewhat obscured by the angle in the photo.

mixed media resin sculpture / life size My sculptures are drawn from a “found-object ” cocktail of elements , assemblage that tell of man’s conflict with nature this took several attempts over many months, the resin reacts when you add a “forign body” so to speak, also it heats to extreme temperature when it sets often distorting the contents…i experiment daily in my caravan with different materials…
About This Group
Altered Books, journals, Art cards, editions, originals (ACEOs), Artist trading cards (ATCs which are traded, not sold), etc. are just the beginning!
Whether you create collages or free standing assemblages, show us your best and finest altered and embellished work. Consider additions to your base of fabric, fibers, metal sheeting, wire, stitch, wax, dyes, beads, transparencies, text, etc.
collage – A picture or design created by adhering such basically flat elements as newspaper, wallpaper, printed text and illustrations, photographs, cloth, string, etc., to a flat surface, when the result becomes three-dimensional, and might also be called a relief sculpture / construction / assemblage. Most of the elements adhered in producing most collages are “found” materials. Introduced by the Cubist artists, this process was widely used by artists who followed, and is a familiar technique in contemporary art.
“Collage” was originally a French word, derived from the word coller, meaning “to paste.”
Assemblage sculpture – A three-dimensional composition made of various materials such as found objects, paper, wood, and textiles.
While I admire quality photo composites of many layers, if the photo collage is the work in its entirety, this is not the group for you. Photo collages can be part of a larger work, but aren’t the focus of this particular group. You may want to check out some sister groups such as Mixed Media or The Art of Photoshop
