It is best seen when the sun is hidden. When parts of clouds are thin and have similar size droplets, diffraction can make them shine with colours like a corona. In fact, the colours are essentially corona fragments. The effect is called cloud iridescence or irisation, terms derived from Iris the Greek personification of the rainbow. The usually delicate colours can be in almost random patches or bands at cloud edges. They are only organised into coronal rings when the droplet size is uniform right across the cloud. The bands and colours change or come and go as the cloud evolves. They occur most often in altocumulus, cirrocumulus and especially in lenticular clouds. Iridescence is seen mostly when part of a cloud is forming because then all the droplets have a similar history and consequently have a similar size. I was lucky enough to be able to camp close enough to the Maheno shipwreck that I could visit it at times when the tides make it hard to get around on Fraser Island. This image is captured at sunset at sunset under a full moon.
Such an unusual sight as we came to a dip in the lovely border countryside late one afternoon . The hollow in the terrain was covered in what looked like a flattened dome of rainbow colours – imagine 3 bubblers joy…! jen whyte and heather croft will have great captures too…! here is heathers’ sideways rainbow view of the same…with heaps more detail… and jens Aura …after the rain where you can see a glimpe of sunlight…. Reading links from the atmospheric optics site it looks as if it could be a ‘low’ (rain)bow … linked to the sun (erm…what sun…teehee) being high in the sky…. ;))

The mixture between a chilly night, with lots of high atmosphere ice crystals, and a bright moon, cause this rainbow-like ring around the moon. As like a ground or rain rainbow, light is getting reflected at different angles, causing the colours. Here, the same thing happens with the ice crystals, they reflect the already reflected sun light from the moon into our eyes. A Moon Ring, or Moon Halo as also known, will always be the same size, 22 degrees across the sky, and will be 44 x the size of the moon. Canon 50D, 10mm, 77 second exposure.. Available Large, and definately best viewed large!
Taken in the Cradle Mountain N. P. in Tasmania. Went here to photgraph Cradle Mountain but the weather made that impossible (its hiding in the low clouds),however I think this fleeting rainbow made up for it to a degree. This was the only shot of the rainbow that was not spoiled by rain drops all over the lens!- / Nikon D300, Nikkor 18-135mm lens.
