Watercolor on Handmade Paper, 9”x12”
Another great one from North American Aviation. Over 10,000 Mitchell bombers in different variants served in virtually every theater of World War II. This drawing is from a few years back.
This is the little Grumman Wildcat that Cmdr. O’Hare flew the day he shot down five Japanese planes on one mission and won the Medal of Honor. I got to see this aircraft (or one painted to look like it actually) in the terminal at O’Hare Airport. Oh, and yes, the airport is named for the famous Navy ace. I did this drawing about ten years ago which you can tell by the crinkling of the paper.

Oliver Hart of Coppull, Lancs ran a large fleet of tippers for the bulk coal trade and among them some rather strange one-offs from their own workshops like this Bristol- cabbed Leyland- engined Guy eight-wheeler. It is seen here at Broad Marsh, Nottingham with a full load of coal while in the background is the viaduct which carried the old Great Central, the last main line built in Britain now sadly no more. A painting like this of your favourite vehicle, British or American, in oils on canvas or board would cost about £1000. It took an enormous amount of courage to fly an SBD Dauntless dive bomber. All the job entailed was flying a slow-moving aircraft directly down into the path of an enemy ship’s antiaircraft guns. A lot of them never returned.
The fabulous Lockheed P-38 Lightning struck fear into the hearts of Luftwaffe pilots who named it “The fork-tailed devil.”
One of the greatest fighters of all time, the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt featured speed and fire-power (8 .50-caliber machine guns). This particular P-47 flew with the 56th Fighter Group, the highest-scoring American squadron in the European theater. Its motto was “Cave Tonitrum,” “Beware the Thunderbolt.”

Inspired by another shot from my Dads Cobra. / Not my best work in my opinion, but here it is anyhow. I was mucking around with the oil pastels again. Its on A4 sketch pad.
‘70’ Chevelle.the gas mileage has gotta suck in this.
The coal drops on the river Tees estuary, in the 1830’s. I love the daunting and weird, distant grey structures, ready to drop the coal upon the collier (coal) ships. My version of another Thomas Hair. Watercolour and pencil. I have another version of this one, where I changed the overall hue.
9X12 Pen & Ink Sketch with Acrylic Washes on Arches Water Color #135 Paper : / After 3 days of sleet and snow and high winds this day the sun came out and bathed everything in sparkling light and wished for warmth. I was always going to go back to this quick sketch I made with pen and ink and acrylic washes, but I kind of gave up.
Prismacolor pencil on A3 Stonehenge paper,
This painting’s based on 2 photos I took at the North Conway, NH rail museum. The Maine Central RR 501 Consolidated “2-8-0” engine was being rebuilt and was all in primer red paint. The snowplow nearby was in poor condition. The scene and location are completely fabricated, and I took some artistic license with the turntable/roundhouse (please forgive me, rail buffs!). I wanted to capture the ambient light that might occur late in the day with a sunset and reflections on snow. Original oil on canvas; 36 X 24 inches.
Sitting outside the High School, waiting to pick up my kids, I challenged myself to a ten minute sketch. I chose a Volkswagen Golf parked in front of me and went for it. / It turned out looking like a Polo, or something smaller….oh well. / Even so, I have been told to “put it on Bubble Dad!” marker pens and copy paper.
Pencil and Color pencil on 100 weight smooth bristol paper sprayed with clear laquer. My cousin was killed in a helicopter accident at The Wheeler Army Air base in Hawaii on 5/27/09 in the afternoon. He and another pilot were testing the helicopter after repairs had been made. My cousins unit was training for deployment to Afghanistan. The helicopter they were in went up and then came down. My cousin loved flying and he loved helicopters, he will be missed. / He is the second child that my Aunt has lost. Her and Bryce were very close, he was born after the other kids had gotten older, My Aunt went through a hard divorce and major heart operation and her and Bryce leaned on each other in their difficult times. Once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards…… For there you have been and there you will long to return. ~Leonardo daVinci /
