Part of a sculpture outside of Kilmainham Jail, Dublin, Ireland. At least 14 leaders of the Easter Rising were executed at Kilmainham Jail in 1916. It was closed in 1924 and is now open to the public. This sculture sits opposite the entrance to the jail and serves as a reminder of what happened inside. (AS IS, Finepix F31fd) / Actually, it’s the Horse Guard’s Parade, as viewed from the Buckingham Palace side of St. James’s Park (the oldest Royal Park in London). The park itself is a haven for many species of birds (and of course, a great number of grey squirrels). Going for a walk at lunchtime around the lake, it’s hard to believe that you are only a few minutes’ stroll away from the Houses of Parliament and if you wave towards Buckingham Palace, Her Majesty might see you. The park’s history can be found on the Royal Parks site and more about the Horse Guards Parade, here (for those short on time, I recommend the shorter Wikipedia entry). / The photo won the ‘A slice of Heaven’ challenge on the 13th Oct 2009. / /

A UNESCO World Heritage Site. Princes Street Gardens is a public park in the centre of Edinburgh, Scotland, in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle. The Gardens were created in the 1820s following the long draining of the Nor Loch and the creation of the New Town. The Nor Loch was a large loch in the centre of the city. It was heavily polluted from centuries of sewage draining downhill from the Old Town. In the 1840s the railway was built in the valley, and Waverley Station opened in its present form in 1854. / The gardens run along the south side of Princes Street and are divided by The Mound. East Princes Street Gardens run from The Mound to Waverley Bridge, and cover 8.5 acres (34,000 m2). The larger West Princes Street Gardens cover 29 acres (120,000 m2) and extend to the adjacent churches of St. John’s and St. Cuthbert’s, near Lothian Road in the west. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: The Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha or Alabaster Mosque (Arabic: مسجد محمد علي, Turkish: Mehmet Ali Paşa Camii) is a mosque situated in the Citadel of Cairo in Egypt and commissioned by Muhammad Ali Pasha between 1830 and 1848. Situated on the summit of the citadel, this Ottoman mosque, the largest to be built in the first half of the 19th century, is, with its animated silhouette and twin minarets, the most visible mosque in Cairo. The mosque was built in memory of Tusun Pasha, Muhammad Ali’s oldest son, who died in 1816. This mosque, along with the citadel, is one of the landmarks and tourist attractions of Cairo and is one of the first features to be seen when approaching the city from no matter which side. The Pantheon is the Roman monument with the greatest number of records: the best preserved, with the biggest brick dome in the history of architecture and is considered the forerunner of all modern places of worship. It is the most copied and imitated of all ancient works. / Michelangelo felt it was the work of angels, not men. / Where it stands was not chosen by chance, but is a legendary place in the city’s history. According to Roman legend, it is the place where the founder of Rome, Romulus, at his death was seized by an eagle and taken off into the skies with the Gods. One of the many amazingly beautiful statues in Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, France. I liked how the windows from a building behind peaked through the bare trees looking almost like stained glass.

Taken in Santiago, capital city of Chile. Santa Lucia Park leads to the lookout point over the city with 360 degree views of the Andes Mountains. The view from the top is seen in Paradise Lost. World Forgotten shows another view of the incredible building in this park. This scene was not set up, the woman walking happened to climb the staircase as I arrived. I have no idea why she was dressed this way, (assuming she was here for a photo shoot?) but it all just fit so well. Featured in Canon DSLR Canon SX100IS MCN: C307A-DF030-B31A5

The Bedlam Theatre is housed in the former “New North Free Church” (built 1846-8) at the foot of George IV Bridge in Edinburgh, Scotland. The building was designed by Thomas Hamilton, an architect also involved in the creation of the New Town in the city. It is on the site of the old city poorhouse, and its name is taken from the nearby site of the city’s first mental health hospital. After the building was abandoned by the church in 1937 it was gifted to Edinburgh University. The University used it for various purposes, including a furniture store and a school of nursing. In 1980, the Edinburgh University Theatre Company (EUTC) moved in, the building being converted for their use. Bedlam Theatre is the oldest student-run theatre in Britain. It is run by a student committee, elected annually. Any member can propose a show for selection by democratic company vote, and all aspects of the production from acting to lighting to taking the tickets are carried out by the student membership. Bedlam Theatre is an Historic Scotland Category B Listed building (HB Number 30020). Information supplied by Wikipedia.
