“It’s a cloudy day and the trees shed their leaves / Never surviving a year they wither into the breeze / We were that once, one solid tree / But we can’t control the seasons and so you fall away from me” ======================================== / image by me 11.05.09 / poem – part of a poem I wrote a few years ago like leaves from a tree

From today until just about Christmas I have been given wall space to hang some framed prints in a local exhibition and on top of this a further dozen and a half mounted ones on sale there too. After trawling through the lows recently it certainly feels nice to be surfing on top of a wave for a short time. To be asked by someone else to display in an exhibition is priceless. Regardless of whether a sale is generated the euphoric feeling of seeing your work hang splendidly for the next 6 weeks is something special for all artists. We all want to see sales and commissions pouring in but for the vast majority it can seem an endless horizon which is why we must never lose faith in our desire, our obsession. We must always continue to do what we do and make work for all to see because ultimately all we want is others to see our work and understand who we are….

Earlier today there was a bit of an incident down on my local beach. A small boy got into the family car which was parked on a reasonably steep street across the road from the beach and managed to release the handbrake and knock this brand new Lexus wagon out of gear. The car rather predictably then took off down the street and rolled right out into the busy main road, over the gutter and down another steep driveway then crashed through two fences and go straight over a sheer eight metre cliff straight on to the sands below. The small boy managed to avoid all traffic and pedestrians and steered the car perfectly down the second long narrow driveway and then leapt from the car just seconds before it went airborne over the cliff escaping with a few cuts and bruises. Not such happy news for the car though… that was comprehesively totalled….. / . / This is the street the car had been parked on about 100 metres up the road in a driveway… if you look carefully you can see the tire marks… / . / / . / directly across the busy busy Lawrence Hargrave Drive the car barrelled across was this narrow and steep private driveway and the little lad managed to get the car straight down this before it veered to the right and plowed straight through the two fences….once again if you look really closely you can see the tire marks… / . / / . / another view of the second driveway with it’s now tastefully displaced fencing… / . / / . / and this is where it ended up much to the consernation and general amazment of the local wet ones… / . / / . / yep that’s some ding in the duco….. / . / / . / a better view of the cliff it came down….and this is a really small sort of cliff for around these parts… phew ! / . / / . / fortunately the NRMA will give you a free tow if your car becomes incapacitated although this may have been somewhat streching the friendship a tad… / . / / . / the fella’s had to try a few types of chains and things before getting it hitched up to this nifty little tow truck and my goodness lucky it was low tide is all I can say….. / . / / . / but soon enough the car was hitched and the Lexus was ready for it’s final inglorious tow up the beach to the dead car place….. / . / / . / but have a look at what that bounce down the cliff did to it… can you imagine the fate of the child if he hadn’t have leapt out the open window as the car got to the cliff…. / . / / . / the fire brigade came to give a bit of assistance too and a passing council worker stopped and stood about with his arms crossed looking inscrutable in his fluro jacket which gave the whole scene the perfect gravitas….and so it all went pretty soothly from that point on… / . / / . / at breakfast this was a brand new car the apple of this families eye… by morning tea it was toast…. / . / / . / and off it goes for a slow and scenic beach trip behind the terriffic little tow truck… / . / / . / so what I’m thinking is that this little boy was unbelievably lucky in many many ways… however I’m also thinking that the insurance company may not be too impressed with the concept of shelling out the bones to replace this shiny and very expensive new car…. which could lead to the little lad being put up for rehoming on ebay fairly soon in order to recoup some of the costs involved in this escapde… or maybe being grounded till he’s about eighty and has paid of the staggering debt his folks now have…. luck hey it comes in all sort sof manifestations ….. here is a link to the newspaper story in the Sydney Morning Herald for the full details and there is an updated version of the story here
This scene from Smoke remains one of the most moving I can recall in any film, that touches on photography and the meaning it can hold. Harvey Kietel’s character Auggie shares his passion with his friend, with a surprising outcome. I am posting it here for you all to enjoy once more and inspire you on to a wonderful Sunday ahead! A PIECE OF ME This shade of green in a dream I’ve never seen / Bleeds the seeds of trees that have never breathed / When we leave and bones become debris / What then of our creed or need to be free / When we lived violently / Envy and jealousy of enemies / Now seem to be fleeting memories / Of time wasted in greed of luxury / When I am dead and buried with family hearts heavy- believe / Wherever your paths may lead / That you still have a part of me / Mean what you say and say what you mean / Don’t mislead; leave the obscene to where it really should be / Know that time exceeds the speed you expect it to be / So when you think your home free you never really see / How foolish you were of thinking what you needed / Was what you really wanted to be / The sights we see are so shortsighted that we only seem to disagree to agree / We never can agree to disagree peacefully / Why can’t we see that we share a common enemy? / A common resolve to solve the hurt and pain that proceeds / Among life and love the war of words can seep deep and make you bleed / Lovers and friends change scenes leaving you with injuries mentally / Don’t let this be you, stay true, to the ones you love, my friends and family / My advice is live to breathe; leave petty hate so we have a reason to succeed / The seasons change steadily, but my true friends were there and here now, ready to stand by me Know that although you think I left selfishly / It wasn’t my choice to join infinity without you with me / Keep me in your heartbeats / In thoughts happy / And know what happened just has to be / When I lay deceased, and cease to be… / Just know that your love allows me to rest in peace / Keep me in memories / For I leave with you a piece of me —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-— / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-— / /
While I was jumping up and down over my home page feature I ran into this journal. I started writing short verses for a series of paintings: “Eighteen Images in Search of a Poet” by Lorenzo Castello. / If you haven’t seen the Tanka verses, also written for this series by Jane Solomon, they are well worth a read, as are a number of other lovely poems by various artists which you’ll find as comments on the images. / I decided to join my verses together as one long and semi-cohesive poem, the meter is not consistent because I wrote a number of these as stand alone verses and had already posted them as comments. I have tried to tie them in and I think it works after a few reads to get the rhythm sorted. I have also recorded it right here I’d like to thank Lorenzo for the inspiration and for permission to include his wonderful images here. The road to success, is marked with the pillars of failure. The world decorates the heroes and demeans the zeroes. The lobby is lush and everbody wants to enter and walk that polished floor. With head held high and sustaining every designed dent of the pillar, we keep walking that decorated lobby. There is light of god to help us see and the path is well light, it only the mind’s light that needs to be kept “Switched ON” and when you reach the end there is a “Stairway to heaven” the flight after that keeps you going high beyond the roof of this castle. Friends don’t forget the feel of the pillars as they have the fingerprints of lessons never to be forgotten.
