  • The Rose Garden #1(Painted Wood Carving)- by Robert Dye

This work was created on a one inch thick wooden panel. The composition was drawn out, some areas were primed, and some negative spaces were left for removal. I used an electric hand saw to cut the spaces of the image out, after drilling pilot wholes in these areas. Then I used a variety of hand held carving blades to add line work within the roses, leaves, and stems. The facade was then sanded and shapes were cleaned up and smoothed out. Then I painted in various layers with acrylics. I used some gold acrylic paint to accent selective shapes, and leaves. There was a very satisfying feeling while working in the wood, leaving some areas (and the boarder) to show the true nature of the grain. The overall piece was finished with a lacquer, which added a nice reflective sheen. The work was photographed at a slight skew to reveal the actual thickness of the wood and the depth of the shapes. The dimensions of the work are 24in. X 18in. It was created in 2007.

  • Gaia's Hope by JosephCClose

/ 15ft x 8ft / Oil Enamel on Steel / / This is a modification of the Greek Gaia. She holds the thread of humanity that runs through seven books of sacred knowledge: primitive art, early tools, agriculture, science, war, religion, and technology. The amphora vase on the figure is symbolic of the womb, and the capacity to carry life. This is the 5th panel of a 89ft structure depicting human evolution and the significance of mythology in our daily lives. The thread is a conduit that ties our reality to myth structure and how it informs human understanding. /

  • Where Land Meets Skye by Mark Tisdale

I was waxing sentimental today about my trip over a year ago to the Highlands of Scotland that included a visit to picturesque Skye. The Isle of Skye is a hauntingly beautiful land the likes of which I’ve never seen before or since. If there’s one place I’ve traveled to that I’m bound to return, it’s this gorgeous place. This photo was my first ever attempt at a panorama. The land in this picture is known as the Quiraing, It’s formed as a result of landslipping, that is, whole series of the earth falling away from each other at different rates, at least my understanding of it. The phenomena creates an amazing view does it not? I would later see scenes from this same vantage point in the motion picture, Stardust (an awesome story by Neil Gaiman worth reading and watching).
