“To live with the conscious knowledge of the shadow of uncertainty, with the knowledge that disaster or tragedy could strike at any time; to be afraid and to know and acknowledge your fear, and still to live creatively and with unstinting love: that is to live with grace.” -Peter Henry Abrahams, The View From Coyaba, 1985

This is the first picture I took and my first view of Rocky Mountain National Park. It was a great day and I’m glad my (step) Dad took us! /

South of Franktown 10 miles—30 miles from Colorado Springs this beautiful bird landed on the fence post just in time for me to capture this scene.

I have decided to try my hand at graduated neutral density goodness, and see if I can’t figure out how to use one of these beauties. I have a Lee .9 (3-stop) soft Grad ND filter, and have been going wild trying to find applications for this wonderful filter. It’s been a lot of learning that is for sure. The sunsets in the Crested Butte area have been just magical lately, here some storm clouds are clearing from the mountains surrounding Mt. Crested Butte. The Upper East River Valley is just a beautiful place and I’m very blessed to call this area home.

I went camping with a friend last summer. We hadn’t planned exactly where to go, just the direction, at least kind of. We found a beautiful camping spot, with a view towards the Sangre de Cristo range on one side, and towards the Sawatch range on the other side. This was just southeast of Poncha Pass, Colorado. I like that area, and the names are like poetry. Sangre de Cristo means “blood of Christ”.

It’s been a while since I was at my fox hole, and decided to go to today to see how the place is. Damage from the storm has progressed to the point that all the back trails are again open and much of the debris from the storm has been removed. There are still piles of limbs here and there, and a LOT more open sky. I ran into this fox within about 50 meters of the parking lot. I’m not familiar with this fox. He sat and watched me for a bit and apparently decided I wasn’t too much of a risk and went about his morning rituals, including a long series of stretches. Lookout Mountain, Golden Colorado It is kind of amazing how much the mornings here in Winter have the glow about them, the air so crisp and fresh…like a renewal…it is utterly invigorating to stand here and watch a scene like this play out…it truly is something! Western Kingbird captured at St Vrain Park here in Colorado using my Minolta 5D and Tamron 200-400mm lens. These guys are TOUGH I have to say, really hard to shoot, but well worth the effort. / —-John
