Mannis Branch Falls is kinda of a hidden falls along Little River Road in the Great Smoky Mountains. Other than the Winter months when the leaves are off it can’t be seen from the road. Even in Winter it is easy to miss. It’s located between Metcalf Bottoms picnic area and Elkmont Campground turnoff. This is the lower section of the falls. I got an early start in the dark up the steep trail which was iced over higher up due to the subzero temperature. Some sections of the trail was also snow covered. Hiking poles really help maintain balance. One of my favorite areas is off trail to the base of Needle Peak; a rugged area of fractured rock and delicate moss. One of the few times to catch the soft light on Yak Peak, across the way, is during fall when the sun’s angle sidelights the face of the granite rock. / I heard ptarmigans vocalizing somewhere amongst the granite rocks and saw frozen bear prints in the snow; large and small probably a sow with a cub. I followed the prints up on a ridge and saw bear droppings punctuated with dozens of undigested berries. Without snow, I would have never known that an animal had passed this way. / Coquihalla Recreation Area north of Hope, BC / Oct 8, 2009 Nikon D50 6 MP / 11-16 mm Tokina at 16 mm / f22, 1/2 sec, -1 EV / WB on shade, iso 200 / Landscape Mode / Polarizing Filter

Hand-held camera on deck of a small ferry-boat, plus Mick was holding me steady on the boat as I shot. My first experience of snow, shot last year in New Zealand en route to Doubtful Sound. Doubtful Sound is the second largest of the 14 fiords in Fiordland National Park. This is an area naturally high in fresh water inflows (7.6 metres of rain falls annually). The area features generally steep terrain, much of it inaccessible on foot, that is heavily forested except for locations where surface rock exposures are extensive.Wildlife to be found in Doubtful Sound includes fur seals and penguins (Fiordland crested and blue), or even rare large whales (Southern Right, Humpback, Minke, Sperm and some Beaked Whales). The waters of Doubtful Sound are also home to an abundance of sea creatures, including many species of fish, starfish, sea anemones and corals. It is perhaps best known for its black coral trees which occur in unusually shallow water for what is normally a deep water species.Doubtful Sound is unusual in that it contains two distinct layers of water that scarcely mix. The top few meters is fresh water, fed from the high inflows from the surrounding mountains, and stained brown with tannins from the forest. Below this is a layer of cold, heavy, saline water from the sea. The dark tannins in the fresh water layer makes it difficult for light to penetrate. Thus, many deep-sea species will grow in the comparatively shallow depths of the Sound. (ref: Wik) Same shoot: /
