Rievaulx Abbey was founded in 1132 by twelve monks from Clairvaux Abbey as a mission centre for the colonisation of the north of England and Scotland. It was the first Cistercian abbey in the north. With time it became one of the great Cistercian abbeys of Yorkshire, second only to Fountains Abbey in fame. / The remote location was ideal for the Cistercians, whose desire was to follow a strict life of prayer and self-sufficiency with as little contact as possible with the outside world. The patron, Walter Espec, settled another new Cistercian community, founding Wardon Abbey, Bedfordshire, on one of his inherited estates, again on unprofitable wasteland, 16 Oct 2009 Pentax K10D 18-55mm lens / 1/60 @ f13.0 ISO 100

Pentax K10D 18-55mm lens DSLR Byland Abbey is one of the old monisteries which were situated in Yorkshire. The spectacular Byland Abbey is one of the three great monasteries of the North. The ruins of this ancient monastic house stand beneath the beautiful Hambleton Hills. Byland was founded in 1134 and was built in the New Gothic style of architecture. It was famous in its day for sheep-rearing and exporting wool and its abbey church was amongst the most impressive in Cistercian Europe. Stunning features not to miss include the elaborate mosaic tiles in the south transept and the great rose window in the west front. You can also explore the remains of fishponds, dams and lakes built to drain the marshy land on which the abbey was built.

A few hours after a couple of my colleagues declared that power lines were most definitely the most boring sight in the world, I decided to see if I could find an interesting perspective. I drove out to a great lookout point, about 40 kilometres (25 miles) away from the city centre. There is a long, deep valley here and although I was hoping for a dramatic sunset, there was no flaring colour to work with. Then I suddenly realised, as dusk faded, that all I had to do was swap my 18-125mm lens for my 70-300mm lens and use the wonderful series of shapes and silhouettes that surrounded the gentle arc of the power lines, against the monochrome of the sky. By shooting from this angle and keeping the frame asymmetrical, I was able to highlight the shapes, while allowing the pylons to disappear into the distance. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 70-300mm lens. F5.6, 1/45 sec, ISO 800, focal length 300mm. 73-3897
