My friend Carrie recently had a baby. She had a difficult pregnancy, almost losing her baby and her own life. Jayden, her 9 year old son, is a proud big brother. Even though his new little sister is a preemie, her journey to the world has made me realize how special life is. Carrie decided to name her Journey Nicole. Perfect name for a perfect little girl. / Welcome to the world Journey! Featured in: / Affection 10/09 / Shades of Grey 10-14-09 / You’re Accepted 10-13-09

Derry (aka Londonderry), Northern Ireland – evidence of The Troubles is everywhere. / July 2009 I couldn’t even begin to try and give a history of what has taken place in Northern Ireland, hence the brief Wikipedia description below. It’s a very complex issue and one that I can’t possibly adequately explain. The Troubles was a period of ethno-political conflict in Northern Ireland which spilled over at various times into England, the Republic of Ireland, and mainland Europe. The duration of the Troubles is conventionally dated from the late 1960s and considered by many to have ended with the Belfast Agreement of 1998. Violence nonetheless continues on a sporadic basis. The principal issues at stake in the Troubles were the constitutional status of Northern Ireland and the relationship between the mainly-Protestant Unionist and mainly-Catholic Nationalist communities in Northern Ireland. The Troubles had both political and military (or paramilitary) dimensions. Its participants included politicians and political activists on both sides, republican and loyalist paramilitaries, and the security forces of the United Kingdom and of the Republic of Ireland. I had such fun with these three paintings—Hot Hats, Hats and Cool Hats. I hate to draw and love to paint. I didn’t go near a pencil when I did this series. The medium is watercolor, I use Arches cold pressed 100% cotton paper, and the dimensions of the original painting are 12 1/8 inches x 16 inches.
