Bush Stone-Curlew, Australian native ground-dwelling bird. These are a terrestrial predator filling a similar ecological niche to the roadrunners of North America. This shot was just after a heavy rain storm, so he was pretty wet :)

    An added note: from experience ( a few months in a remote corner of Magnetic Island) they don’t perform that spine-chilling chorus all year, much less every night. For Aboriginals, though, that sound was a signal that a baby was being conceived. So take care, Adam, if you venture out at night….
