size differentials, tonal gradations and ambiguous lighting meld together making apparent the idea of art. this has great depth. it sustains itself through devised tension.
Im bat shit crazy for the lighting on the posts…it gives this such a surreal feel. So many incredibly potent symbols and dynamics for my eyes to salivate over…....
THAT’S IT! You’ve found utopia in your mind – and presented it as art to the world! If this doesn’t catapult you into the art world… I’m at a loss for words! The sense of distance, use of scale and perfectly created elements just work so perfectly to create this amazing scene… The colour space you are in is so wonderful, where the distant dark clouds are so contrasted by the blast of light in the foreground. We all expereince this light from time to time but you’ve managed to harness it in a single visual and create a special piece of art! You’ve painted something so magnificent here and all from elements at your disposal – that takes a true talent!!
This is one of those pieces that took a long long time to sink in. For me, it hits a lot of nostalgic buttons- everything from the view driving out to Melton, to getting lost walking to school, fear of the lolly pop man, to fear of open spaces. Fear plays a big part in it. But it also has enough artificial elements to reassure me that it isn’t all real. Only the feelings are real. There isn’t really a big field on the way to Melton with lots of space and a lolly pop crossing and I’m not really lost there. That is the nightmare. The reality is unknown, but it’s somewhere, outside this image. If this image is a journey to find one’s self, I come from a dark place.
Asthetically, this works so well because of the heavy sky, low perspective and depth of field. The red and white posts confirm the unusual tones of the image and take us from “uncomfortable” to “surreal.” The placement of the figure while small and seemingly insignificant is highly symbolic and transforms the landscape into a journey, and the figure appears to be mid course. The hay bails tower up, perhaps reminiscent of country days now replaced with city buildings? Or perhaps just obstacles to be climbed or avoided?
It’s been a pleasure viewing, pondering and dreaming about this Lindsay. Your style is infectious.
