070 - IF ONLY THESE BRICKS COULD TALK I (WATERCOLOUR & INK) - 1997

Yes, before you say it … strange! :-)

As of July 2009, this painting has had 5,048 viewings and has been favourited 79 times and had 194 comments, so I guess someone out there likes it. Many thanks for your enthusiasm.

To be candid though, I’ll never cease to be amazed at its reception, as I didn’t spend too much time on it and even kept it out of my portfolio for ages as I thought it was sub-standard.

PLEASE NOTE – AS THE PROPORTIONS OF THIS ARE NOT IN LINE WITH THE PRINTING REQUIREMENTS, IT IS NO LONGER FOR SALE

Thanks Terry & Penny. I did this eight years ago and I can see loads of faults in it, but who cares :-) I mentioned to Penny that producing a painting must be like giving birth. To continue the analogy, however bad our paintings may be we still love them. Having said that, I have torn a few up in disgust, but I try not to make a habit of it.

I am bowled over by your comments … you are all very kind. if the people in my home town are as kind as you, my first little solo exhibition next year should go well. So many people comment on artwork with “very nice, but …”and then a lengthy critique follows. You guys are really nice.

Thanks for your support. I added you to my watchlist, I just worked out how to do it!

  • BLYTHART

    BLYTHART

Thanks Jackie. My wife has been suggesting for years i do illustrating. As my pictures are all small (A4) you may have a point. I once had three or four of my pen and inks in magazines locally and I got a thrill from it. My original interest in art was inspired by the illustrations of Aubrey Beardsley, whose original drawings I once had the privilege of holding in my hands at the V & A, London.

    Andy Mercer

Congrats on the 1000 viewings that really is very good you know. On the sales thing.. I think it would be a good idea to have a think about your key words for this.. and try a few test searchs.. This work could easily be an illustration for a book on “well known sayings”. So it may be worth doing some research of this type of book for keywords. You have to consider that someone might be looking for a particular image for a particular work.. if they want “brick” “sayings” and “drawing” you want your image to pop up in searchs. Hope thats usefull.

  • Andy Mercer

    Andy Mercer

Also I would get plenty of north east references into your key words generally.. “tyne” “northumbria” even slang words etc etc you have an audience up there already and you want and their friends and other folks who recognise your locations to be able to easily find you.

    Colin Cartwright

I think I know why. Other than it’s an imaginative and very fine painting. There is little movement in these first page images. As when I put in ‘watercolour painting’ I always see this image on the first page.

Hope that helps with the mystery.

  • BLYTHART replied

It’s a chicken-and-the-egg situation I think. My Mao picture is also on the first page and that has had 1,082 viewings, 86 comments and 51 favouritings, so are they there because they had viewings, or did they have a lot of viewings because they are there? I think I shall submit this riddler to the panel via my Journal :)

  • Colin Cartwright

    Colin Cartwright

I’m not sure. Whether it’s high views or whether they are just frozen there by a technical glitch – but they need moving, so others can have their work on the first page. It seems unfair the way it is.

I may mention this in a forum.

  • BLYTHART replied

Have you not read my Journal entry? It would seem that they are there because of their high viewings. The only way to get them off the page would be to tell people to stop looking at them and I won’t do that.

Firedrake has seven pictures on page one, but I am pleased for her; I do not want her work removed; she deserves to be there.

Thanks Karon. That’s a really kind thing for you to say. I’m still flabbergasted at the response this has had. It’s twelve years old and recently I tried doing what I thought was a better version of it, but it didn’t get such a good response as this. Maybe simplicity is the key … who knows? If I could find the secret to this painting I’d do all my paintings the same way :)

    Nira Dabush

    Hello there Dave..
I read your info about this image.
In fact, personally I fav it few times… and even commented twice before.
Several times, without visiting your portfolio.. I reminded of it also.
Today, I fav. several more paintings of your which has a specialty of style and charm – the cat’s paintings.
    BUT…
In this specific painting, I feel you manage to create situation, which in a way was part of my personal life….in a way still.
I wonder, why you personally created it… I mean what sort of inspiration led you to deal with this subject or work…
I believe different people can look at this painting, with different understanding, according to who they are…
To me it has ONE MEANING.

  • BLYTHART replied

Many thanks. It was about twelve years ago when I did this. The technique is a bit wooden, but it seems to appeal to many viewers. It can be read on a few levels and for me, art is about people projecting their own experience onto it in many cases. I try to “think out of the box” when I can and this just happened. It stayed in my display book for years and I wasn’t going to upload it on Redbubble as I thought it was too primitive … glad I did though. I am pleased you find something worthwhile in it – that encourages me a great deal – thanks again.

  • BLYTHART replied

Wow – thanks. My work is weird (I hope) and some have even had the cheek to imply it is drug-induced, but I actually grew up in a (very) strict Methodist family and was almost tee-total till my early thirties and I haven’t even tried tobacco. I shudder to think how weird my art would be if I’d tried any illegal substances :) Being a fanatical Beatles fan since 1962 and watching Yellow Submarine probably had something to do with my tastes in art :) I am now taking ten tablets (pills to the Americans) a day for angina and as I am not supposed to take alcohol with them, two cans of beer gets me squiffy because of the medication, so I can get “high” for less than $4 :) Just think – next March when I qualify for a free bus pass I can go on a Magical Mystery Tour :) You will be seeing more weird and wonderful stuff from me in the future – I hope. Thanks for your enthusiasm – I really appreciate that a lot.

Hello Dave.. early morning now, as I saw your image once more, in “my bubble”.. and since i know it is viewed so many times… here’s another one.. WHY NOT… :-)
I’m sure the viewers of my portfolio enjoy it a fav. of mine.
    ........................................
And i imagined another painting inspired by this… according to the title..
Lets say, the female bricks are talking to the male bricks… Perhaps she can…
and the male bricks would not answer from 1 reason.. or another…
    or vice versa.
The male bricks talk, while the female can’t
    Good morning

You know… we talked about this idiom..
And since i know you work sometimes with bricks…
    There’s an idiom, in Hebrew:
דבר אל הקיר”, daber el ha’kir = talk to the wall.
That means you talk to the wall…the wall, referring to someone.. but this person, you talk to, would not answer… would answer as these bricks.

There is a lot in internet communication, which can be direct, or indirect.. its material for thoughts for you also, Dave.. perhaps for future artworks. Internet communication, is inspiring to me, at least.
    Enjoy the weekend.

Actually its all about building “walls of defence”
    Ha’internet hu maka… pashut maka.

Ha-ha – you do seem to like this image :) Have you seen any of my other pictures? In a recent version of this, one of the figures is reaching out a reassuring hand to the other who seems distressed.

Ah, with so many views and comments who’d want to be ‘left-out?’
Yes, if bricks could talk… I recently moved into an old condo building with brick party walls… sometimes in the still of the night… what’s that murmur?...
    Love your sense of fun!
