The Blue Veil

Geoff Coleman - Landscapes

The Blue Veil

This is the middle cascade of the magnificent National Falls, Royal National Park, NSW Australia. Taken in the late evening during that magic time when the flowing water gets a blue tint to it.
There are three tiers to the falls and each one gets longer as you go down. This one is about 30m high but the bottom one would be at least 100m. It’s really hard to get to and I’m just waiting for some torrential rain to go back and get it. It’s a fascinating trip – you have to actually walk behind the falls to get to their base.
Here’s a shot of the top cascade:

and here’s a shot of the base of the middle cascade just after dusk (when the water goes that magic blue for about 20 minutes)

    Gorgeous waterfall shots.
Can you believe that one guy actually wrote to one of the UK photography mags with words to the effect that he would stop buying the mag if they showed any more of this kind of shot.

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

Haha – I can kind of empathise with him – I feel a bit that way about flower macros – there are just so many of them.

Geoff, I love what you do and you do it so damn well!!! I really do feel like stepping through my pc screen (ok, so it would be a bit of a squeeze) and standing under that incredible silky cascade of water.

    (insert happy sigh here)

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

Ah you sweet thing – you can squeeze through my Mac anytime (it’s bigger than a pc so no problems there!). Yes I’m looking forward to standing under it in the next few weeks the way our lovely spring is emerging.

The water is so well lit it almost looks like a ray of light itself beaming down from above. The clarity of the water is excellent and I love the two small falls in the foreground together with their outlet spreads captured so well.

these images are so beautiful…... I love the slow shutter effects of the waterflow….like silk!! It almost reminds me of beams of light it is so opaque and airy…

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

No, that my friend is the perfect comment – thanks so much for your wonderful words – made my day!

  • clarkey

    clarkey

This is so dreamy; the blue water is certainly veil-like, and with the slow shutter speed, the splashes at the base are explosions of cloud or snow. It sounds like you would have to be very careful in getting down to take these shots. Very beautifully shot. I’m looking forward to seeing your shots from the bottom after a torrential downpour.

This is definately one of those moments when one can say…I was in the right place at the right time...the combination of that perfect waterfall exposure and those rays, which seem to be mimicking the waterfall…truly make this an exquisite capture!

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

Yes it is rarely this full – I’ve only seen it like this once in two years so was so glad I caught it. Thanks heaps for really looking at it – love it when I get observations like this.
