Craig, in my opinion it seems you had doubts about entering this shot for the competition, but this is definitely one of the better shots for me. Like you said, not only an interesting face and person, but also a great fitting background, good treatment, interesting sky, what more do you want in a portrait?! :)

What an excellent composition – the “Captain” certainly was in the right place at the right time; I think Black and White is the perfect medium for this particular image and I can only see great things coming of it! The lighting, focus, depth, fine detail of the Captain’s weathered features all ties it together – Very Nice! :-) JD

The choice for B&W was inspired to bring out the tones and lines of his face and with the choice of backdrop – perfect.

My first thought was: “The old man and the sea” story. Love the dark tones and the overal low key setting. excellent portrait and the BG is tied perfectly with his character. excellent.

This is just such a brilliant image Craig – yes he is perfect for it but it is the way you’ve composed him against the tall ship and lighthouse in the background, plus the use of b/w and the sky processing that really makes this such an exceptional image. Definitely competition material!

Arrrrr! He does look a bit salty. Works well in bw, I think the background boats, light house and buildings would be distracting in color. Good position in the frame; that left eye is right on the R3 intersection. This is a good one for teaching/learning.

-darkening the edges just a bit, maybe
-adding some grain or other texture to make it look a bit old. Its just a bit too sharp and clean for my taste. I sort of think he should look more… weathered?
