I found this barn along Route 30 between Breezewood and Bedford in PA. When I first saw it only a couple of years ago, parts were still being used for hay storage. But when I drove past recently, March 15, 2009, it was clear I was looking at something that won’t be around much longer. I don’t know the history, but directly across the road had been a very interesting, 2-story log house that is gone now, as well. Only the brick fireplaces and a pile of rubble remain.
Image taken with the Nikon D40x using the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens, handheld. This is a composite image … I used a threatening sky that I shot in my backyard at the end of March, ‘09. Post processed for the sky composite addition, then, using a single image which I duplicated twice at 2 +/- eval in Photoshop, I created the hdr in Photomatix. Back to Photoshop for some more clean up work. All together, probably about 7 layers.

Karen Tillotson
Love this Lois…the mood of the sky, the intense burning colours, as if it’s about to spontaneously combust from the sheer pain of abandonment & neglect. Wonderful work!!!!
Lois Bryan replied
Oh, Karen … you really got it!!!!!! This whole thing with the small American family farming industry going toes up is such a heartbreak when you see it first hand. Thank you for your note!!!!
ej29
Wonderful work…Love the colors, the sky really makes the photo, also the way you worked the grass around the edge is awesome….great detail!!!
Lois Bryan replied
Hi Elaine!!! Thank you so much, sweetie!!!! I’m glad you liked the sky … in the original, the sky was actually white!!! ICK!!!! And the sky I chose for this is actually from a fun one in my own backyard!!! So glad you liked the combination!!!

you have lots of friends who have said much….but the title fits….
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you. That’s a lovely compliment. The titles are very important to me … sometimes I’ll have a perfectly nice shot, but … I’ll feel like it deserves a special title and simply won’t upload it until I get it right.
Wendi Donaldson
Very cool shot, Lois!!! Nicely captured!
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you so much, Wendi!!!!
loramae
Ummm I was tickled with myself managing 3 layers lol and here you are with 7 layers and the look is outstanding! This shot reminds me of an old woman dressed in her favorite red dress, waiting patiently for her final breath… Congratulations on your feature Lois ;)
Lois Bryan replied
Loramae, don’t be too impressed, lol!! When I work in Photoshop, I always work in duplicates … and duplicates of the duplicates. Then, if you do hdr, you need to make two more of your final, then, you’ll get to another final shot, which goes back into photoshop, and gets duplicated!! So, they add up!! Not to mention, in this case, I had a whole different image, the sky, which is where the composite thingie comes in … and it got duplicated … and blended in … so … it might be more than 7, but a lot were duplicate layers. By the way … your comment about the old woman is absolute poetry … and I’m completely honored that my little image brought those beautiful and heart-tugging thoughts to your mind!!!!! Thank you!!!!!

Bruce Dickson
Lois, I’ve always held the view that the new world’s dilapidated barns are these country’s equivalents of the ancient ruins surviving in the rest of the world. Maybe not world heritage listed temples, but something at least to appreciate!
Lois Bryan replied
Bruce, I agree completely. When I traveled in Greece and Italy and some of the other adjacent areas, I felt such a haunting presence of romance and melancholy and tragedy … and I have the same feelings as I’m watching America’s agrarian lifestyle crumble before my eyes. I have a lot of old barns, in various stages of disrepair, throughout my portfolio … (and more on the computer) ... I just can’t resist them!!!!!
Philip Johnson

Wayne Cook
It was a vast reach between Heaven and Hell,
This mark of man, told the tale,
Fallen upon the times and use,
Each plank seemed to work its way loose
No shift in fortunes, it had lost its way,
By thunder, by year, by work and day,
Passed over previous years,
And lost to the eye of storm
When I saw it thus, it was already worn
Clearly abandoned, with little to feel,
Even the paint, with its age had peeled
Among who’s possessions, this last was laid,
You’d hardly call it an asset, and its course was laid,
No future, past gone, the present in doubt,
End Times seemed certain…I slowly strode out.
Lois Bryan replied
Wayne … your ability to create a defined story, strong emotion, stir the imagination … just puts me in awe of your talents!!! Thank you … once again … for raising the conscious to new heights!!!!!!!!!! The “Everyman” in your tale … was … me. How did you know?
Rick & Deb Larson
You did a FABULOUS job on these old building remains (it’s too bad that the owner let it get to the point of no repair … memories lost). Take Care ~ Rick & Deb ~ ☺
Lois Bryan replied
Thanks so so much, darlings!!! Another labor of love, this one was. I learned a lot figuring this one out … such fun!!! As to the owners, there are so many structures like this around … just hanging on by a thread, really. In so many cases the owners have gotten too old to care for their buildings … and their families have moved away. I think that’s what keeps me coming back to these kinds of scenes, the human tragedy in the loss of the family farm.
Gerry Myers
wonder shot
Lois Bryan replied
Thank you very much, Gerry … you’ve found one of my favorites.

Lois i’m enjoying going through your portfolio
