Dyin' Alone
Dyin’ Alone
Thou shalt not fear the lonely life
For to fear livin’ alone
Is a life not for livin’
And thou shalt not fear the lonely death
For to fear dyin’ alone
Is a death not for dyin’
The shade may hide you
The light may guide you
The stranger may find you
But at the falling of the darkened veil
Forgive and forget what has been
And know that irregard of friend or foe
Everyone dies alone

For Alice
I’m dedicating this image to Alice Oates who suggested I enter this in the Loch Lomond challenge in the UK National Parks group. I promised if it won I’d dedicate the image to her, and indeed it went on to win, so this is for you Alice :)
Pay It Forward
I was also delighted to hear that his image was nominated for the prestigious Pay it Forward group by Alice Oates (above). Each person is allowed to nominate their absolute favorite work created by someone else on Redbubble – and they are only allowed to choose one, so it’s a huge honour to be selected. Thanks a million Alice!...
”I would like to nominate Dyin’ Alone by Donald Cameron because, as you can see in his description, he went ahead with his promise that he’d dedicate the image to me if he won a challenge I suggested he enter. Also, I think it’s a fantastic image in itself, and deserved said win.”

Cheers for the feedback. You can’t tell from the image but I took this in lashing rain under an umbrella, luckily this was the only shot that didn’t have rainspots on the lens.

what a loverly sentiment , and the strength off this tree over powers the wonderful hill all around to me it’s the watcher of the loch, great work Donald

Superb image! The tree and mountain rige shapes juxtapose nicely and create a dramatic image.
Donald Cameron replied
Yes I think the mountain ridges are enhanced by having had such low cloud on the day, on a clear day these would be less prominent. Pleased you like it.

Aha .. the famous Milarrochy tree. Lovely moody shot, Donald. Congrats on a well-deserved feature!
Donald Cameron replied
I saw someone else’s shot of the tree yesterday and said exactly the same thing. Like I said to him I think it’s obligatory for every Scottish photographer to shoot this tree! You capture Scotland so well yourself, so it’s an honour to get such comments from you.
Imber
Great shot, love square format here.

Duncan Waldron
It’s easy to bemoan the oft sullen grey skies of Scotland, but you have turned them to a thing of beauty here. It’s a fine work, sensitively processed, and would look brilliant at mural size.
Donald Cameron replied
Yes I often jest about the Scottish weather but it’s so varied and constantly changing that it does present lots of opportunities to get the right lighting etc. so it’s a great place to shoot. Darker cloudy skies are actually my favourite conditions to get a good long exposure image, like this one.
Hena Tayeb

Wonderful shot! Great light!
Donald Cameron replied
Thanks yes the light was quite eerie with the sun backlighting the low dark clouds, made for quite a nice contrast.
Jan Timmons
I could only repeat other comments. I do like the thought of the fervent photographer taking this shot in lashing rain. Love the way you composed this, and delighted to find you.
Donald Cameron replied
Yes not the ideal conditions to be shooting in and like I said above this was the only shot that didn’t have rainspots on the lens, so I got quite lucky. Thanks for stopping by and commenting :)
Tommy Dickson
Lovely, that wee tree never fails to impress.
Donald Cameron replied
Cheers. It’s amazing how often this tree gets photographed isn’t it? I think it must be because Loch Lomond is one of the most popular tourist spots, this is probably the most accessible part of the loch and there’s not much there except the tree!

And to think I nearly didn’t even bother getting the camera out because of the weather! Thanks so much Scott. Maybe you could suggest the double favourite idea to redbubble :)

mm1208
i love it
though it doesnt communicate death to me.
its telling me to life, even if the life obstacles try to break u.
this tree didnt crumble.
it even produced a beautifully looking crown in the end.
Donald Cameron replied
Thinking about your comments, the tree is very much alive (as far as I could tell) so it’s good that someone gets a different feeling from it. Funnily enough if the title had been “Living Alone” it would have still have had that same feeling of isolation. And begs the question, which is sadder, living alone or dying alone?...

Well done on another feature, Donald. I was up at Milarrochy the other day (photographing the tree of course) and one of the rangers asked me why everybody wanted to photograph that tree. I told him “because it’s there” .. but I thought “if you don’t know, I’ll be wasting my time trying to explain”.
Donald Cameron replied
Thanks Karl. Yes they must get so puzzled by the number of people turning up there, for non-photographers it probably seems a little odd!

Great image Donald….inspires me to get out this winter and try to capture some trees like this, showing all the skeletal detail.
Donald Cameron replied
Cheers Ian, yes I’d like to find more subjects like this myself but it’s tricky finding trees that are just “right” for this type of shot. Most people look forward to autumn for the colours, but like you I’m eagerly awaiting the barrenness of winter!
