The Siamese had a few tales on how the head ended up here. One, the Burmese-Siamese civil war damaged the ancient statues. Two, the French had cut off all Buddha heads when they conquered in the late 1600s. Three, burglars had tried to steal the head but it was too heavy so they gave up and left it. And last (but not least), burglars had tried to steal the head to sell at lucrative prices but were chased by guards. To hide the head they left it in the woods. Whichever tale you believe, years upon years tree roots had overgrown the head – as if protecting it from bad intentions.
This picture was taken in the second ancient city, Ayutthya, Thailand.
