Populus flucta

Patricia Van Lubeck

Populus flucta

These are actually not poplar trees but the nesting colonies of the sociable weavers in the Kalahari desert. The weaver birds build their nests in high trees or in this case man made poles. The nesting material is harvested by local farmers to be sold as an industrial fire retardant and gets it’s color from the nearby Red dunes

This Image is awsome I thought it was computer generated. This is actually some place in the world and what is it the farmers are havesting? Are the red cones the nests that they make or are the birds making nest in the bristles of the cones? Whatever they are doing this is an awsome image!

  • Patricia Van L... replied

    Thanks Patrick
Glad my explanation got to your imagination ;-)

what an amazing story! I thought for sure this was an art piece rather than photography until I read it – you’re not pulling our legs are you? It seems like something out of a fantasy story – who would believe it in a book?! A fav from me! I love being amazed!

  • Patricia Van L... replied

    Thanks Nadine,
I’m glad you like my explanation ;-)

Im sorry I had not looked at your bubble before. You got me I thought this was real! Your explanation made me think this was some new eco thing … It could happen! ha ha ha I have to go to sleep now!

  • Patricia Van L... replied

You’re right, it could happen! My paintings are not that far from reality though.
I was actually inspired by the vast Pinus radiata plantations nearby Rotorua, NZ.

Genius image. I love the gap down the centre row of trees.
It really draws you in, and then away with the curvature of the distant trees.
    Fantastic!

  • Patricia Van L... replied

    Thanks Mikyle,
You are right, the keyhole is sort of a hidden focal point in this painting. I’m glad you found it!

I can’t belivee I fell for this! you even have ‘oil on canvas’ in the description. I am SO gullible – I guess I wanted to believe it. It was very well done though – I checked out the birds and there is a picture of huge nests in the trees…. ha ha! love it still!

  • Patricia Van L... replied

Gullibility is a very undervalued quality! It’s good to be gullible! I’m glad you checked out the birds nests, aren’t they wonderful?
