May I Introduce Myself?
Under the sea, roams a four ton (3630 kgs) humpback whale full of playful fun…this rambunctious humpback whale calf considered our little group of snorkelers as his own personal “rubber duckies” in the shallow waters of the Dominican Republic’s Silver Bank. He played with us for hours, swimming close enough to touch us (literally!) while his mother napped below us, her reverie broken every 25” when she surfaced for a breath.
This protected marine area is known as the Sanctuary For The Marine Mammals Of The Dominican Republic, including the waters of the Dominican Republic’s Silver Bank, Navidad Bank and Semana Bay.
Located approximately 80 miles (approximately 123 kms) to the north of the Caribbean island nation of the Dominican Republic, the Silver Bank plays host to several thousand North Atlantic migrating humpback whales every year during the northern hemisphere’s winter months. Mother whales swim here from the cold nutrient-rich waters of the North Atlantic Ocean to bear their young as well as mate with hopeful males. Waters of the Silver Bank are relatively warm and shallow, about 60 feet deep (18 meters) on average, ideal for birthing humpback young. Additionally, the Silver Bank is a virtual underwater desert, devoid of rich schools of fish that would otherwise attract predators. This is a perfect environment in which to bring a baby whale into the world.
Surface activity among competitive males hoping for a chance to mate ranges from breaching to pectoral slaps to tail lobs and slaps, all of it quite exciting. Yet the experience of being able to slip into the water with relaxed mothers, their calves and sometimes male escorts takes whale watching to new heights, inspiring emotions ranging from awe to sheer unadulterated joy.
The humpback whale is classified as an endangered species. Threats to its survival include commercial whaling and boat strikes as well as entanglement in fishing gear, most commonly nets and fishing lines.
Photographed with a Fuji Finepix F30 with a waterproof housing, manual setting, -2/3, f/4.0, shutter 1/400.

lanebrain phot...
I cannot believe this….I have been close to whatles before but not like this! This is such an amazing shot….underwater even!! Thanks so much for the details on this as well!! Straight to my favorites!!
whalegeek replied
Thank you ever so much, lanebrain. I admit to having been quite choked up with emotion when this fella played with us, an experience that is most uncomfortable while wearing a snorkel and mask. For a whale geek, I do not exaggerate when I tell you that being so near to these humpbacks-
-indeed, seeing their eyes looking straight at me—was akin to a religious experience. They continue to amaze me.erika15
oooohh I like this! It’s an amazing shot! You’re so lucky to take this shot!
whalegeek replied
erika15, being amongst whales is indeed a blessing. Thank you for stopping by for a look.
Barbara Burkhardt
Sigh! How beautiful … and wonderful you, who so admires these great creatures had the chance to witness them in their own deep blue “room”. This moves me.
whalegeek replied
Barbara, you are very kind and clearly a fellow whale geek! After perusing your portfolio of beautiful animal images, I strongly suspect you cannot get enough of Nature’s wonders either. Thank you for your uplifting comments!
Andrew Price
‘Look at the Whale, ‘aint he beautiful, I think I’m going to cry!’
whalegeek
Andrew, that’s just what we did, get teary-eyed when in the company of this great whale. Unfortunately that tends to fog one’s mask. Cheers!
JennyDean
fantastic.
whalegeek replied
Thank you ever so much, JennyDean. One note on this gorgeous baby whale. He reminded me of my own very young, newly adopted shelter rescue dog, a playful juvenile delinquent absolutely full of himself. I’ll never forget this young fellow and wish him and his mother godspeed on their migration to northern feeding grounds.
Erik Schlogl
Beautiful shot, instant favourite!
whalegeek replied
Thank you ever so much, Erik! You have a keen eye for what lies underwater. I am honored that you enjoyed this baby whale so much!
Shaina Lunde
Wow!!!! Amazing shot!!!!
whalegeek replied
Thank you, Shaina. I can’t tell you how amazed I was that this big old boy kept passing by us for looks as he played. It’s always a good day when with whales.
Phil Threlfall
Stunning shot !!!
whalegeek replied
Phil, thank you for your kind comment. Much appreciated.
sharon wingard
great shot
whalegeek replied
Sharon, thank you for taking the time to have a look at this humpback calf!
Andrew Trevor-...
Wonderful. I have dreamed of getting shots like this – you’ve done it. Congratulations.
whalegeek replied
Thank you, Andrew, ever so much. You do such terrific photography that I am pleased you enjoyed this big baby calf’s photo. By the way, it’s good to read that Angus the kitty is feeling better.
Anne Hale
Oh, how wonderful and such a great capture. I sure would love to experience something this beautiful.
whalegeek replied
Anne, you are so very kind. I ADORE your whale tail and art! You are blessed to live so near the water where these creatures dwell.
Stephen Beattie
Spectacular!!! Congratulations! You lucky/highly skilled guy!
whalegeek replied
Thank you, Stephen, for taking a look at this beautiful baby. I should tell you that I am a female whale geek! This fellow (it is definitely a male humpback whale calf) was quite a ham, returning for one pass after another after another. He was so exuberant that he even clunked my husband on the head with his tail fluke. Those photos were even closer!
Stephen Beattie
I apologize for my sexist assumptions, most of the “geeks” I know are men… :-) And it certainly doesn’t make you any less lucky/highly skilled! I’ve dived in Maui in the winter and consider myself fortunate to have heard whale song underwater, but, what can I say, “You da (wo)man!!!”
whalegeek replied
You are too funny, Stephen. Absolutely no offense taken as I’m a woman who is not uptight and angry, particularly toward males. I LOVE men! Just ask my husband! No sexist assumptions here…I just thought I’d let you know I’m female. And yes, women can be geeks. It’s a badge of honor that I and my fellow whale nuts-
both male and female—wear with honor. You’re a sweetie. I think I’ll make you an honorary whale geek. Thanks for making me smile today.Angie McKenzie
wonderful capture!!
whalegeek replied
Thank you, AngieM. This is one handsome little boy whale calf.
Steve Hunter
We are lucky enough here in Southern California to see these magnificent whales along with Blue Whales and many other species off the coast. How lucky are you to be able to swim with them.
whalegeek replied
Oh, Steve, I HAVE to get out your way to see the blues! A friend from S. Cal. is a docent on a whale boat near the Channel Islands. She’s always tempting me to come out for a look by emailing photos and cruise reports. A definite must do.
Several weeks ago I watched a Nature special about the blues off California’s coast. It was finally definitively proven that a California blue whale female bore a calf off the coast of Costa Rica, proving where at least one of the California population of blues’ calving grounds is. You may enjoy the amazing footage contained in this fine piece, along with some fascinating new discoveries about blues. Google it on the web for more information.
I got a kick out of seeing your photo of the Chicago harbor lighthouse in your portfolio. That’s in my neck of the woods but unfortunately there are zero whales in Lake Michigan.
What a disappointment that your camera failed while in SE Alaska. My husband and I had two camera body failures on a trip last year. Fortunately we carry a spare body but now I’m considering taking along two!
Steve Hunter
I saw the National Geographic special on Blue whales. If you come here, go out of Santa Barbara. I have seen upwards of 10 blues at one time. Believe me, it is a life changing experience to have a 100 foot blue whale dive directly under your boat.
Check out the website for the Condor Express out of Santa Barbara.

whalegeek replied
Thank you for the tip, Steve. I’ve bookmarked Condor Cruises on my computer for future reference. To see a blue whale is one of my life’s dreams. What a memory you have of that incredible blue whale gracing your vessel with a close up view.
Heather Nel
INCREDIBLE SHOT …. FABULOUS : )
whalegeek replied
Heather, thank you ever so much. This “little” whale was quite a performer.
You have some terrific images from your country. I particularly enjoyed your Zulu-related images. Thank you for sharing your country with the rest of us!
Catherine Hadler
Oh wow, lucky you, what an amazing sight!
whalegeek replied
Catherine, I consider any day spent with whales a happy day. Thank you for stopping by to have a look.
kimberleigh sarah
So close!! I think their beautiful!! But I’d be to scared to actually swim next to one! =)
whalegeek replied
Oh, kimberleigh sarah, perhaps there’d be some trepidation on your part at first but once you begin to experience the wonder of the great whales, pure joy takes over. Thank you for commenting.
Franklin Lindsey
Awesome shot, and a brave shoot. Congratulations.
whalegeek replied
Thank you, Franklin. This whale was a hoot, a regular juvenile delinquent. I’ll carry the awe of this moment with me forever.
Nature's Realm
A beautiful capture of a magnificent creature…kudo’s – Dennis
whalegeek replied
Thank you, Dennis. The magic of that moment remains with me and always will.
Phill Danze
What an unbelievable experience. Just amazing to see this picture and think that you simply took it, amazing shot….well done.
whalegeek replied
Thank you, PhillDanze. This was the most cheeky humpback calf I’ve ever run across. He played and played and played with us. This was undeniably one of the best underwater whale encounters I’ve ever experienced.
I revisited your Antarctica photos to enjoy that splendid white, blue and black palette to the south. Fantastic images, PhillDanze.
Kat36
You are sooo lucky to be near these beautiful animals, they are one of my favourites, but unfortunetely I’ve not yet experienced them up close. Always brings a tear to the eye when I see stories of them!
whalegeek replied
I have reactions similar to what you describe, kat36 when near whales. There’s exhilaration but also that feeling of awe and joy. I hope you will experience the joy of whales before too long.
Steve Bulford
What a great shot, love it!
whalegeek replied
Thank you, Steve. This is one of my favorite photos. I hope this little guy thrives to grow into one of the big boys.
Stephen Colquitt
You are brave!!
whalegeek replied
Oh, I don’t know about being brave so much as just plain “geeky” when it comes to whales!
Mariann Rea
I bet that was an amazing experience!!
whalegeek replied
Yes, Mariann, this was an incredible experience. I always say that any day spent with a whale is a GREAT day.
Andrea Searle
Wow… So awesome
whalegeek replied
Andrea, thank you very much!
Cora Wandel
whalegeek replied
Thank you! Happy to be accepted.
Marilyn Harris
Wow! What an incredible experience it must have been for you! Such gorgeous creatures sure need to be protected! Thanks for sharing! Marilyn :o)
whalegeek replied
Blossom, I do indeed feel very protective toward whales. They’ve been hunted so near to depletion over the years that they deserve some consideration. Thank you for your kind comments.
Sharon Mau
You are truly blessed Gina!! How wonderful it would be to be so close to this magnificent creature. This is a fabulous image, I love it so much!!
Congratulations on your wonderful feature in Americas ~ Rural, Urban, Wild, Free
whalegeek replied
Thank you, Sharon for the honor of a Feature in your group. I’m tickled pink for this big baby to receive attention. I so long to get into the water with whales again. That’s been one of my most cherished life experiences. Unforgettable.
Anne Hale
Congratulations on your feature. Much deserved for this beautiful capture!
whalegeek replied
Thank you ever so much, Anne. Very kind of you.
LumenLux
What a photo to share such an experience!
whalegeek replied
How kind of you to stop by and comment, LumenLux. This was a very special moment to this particular whale geek!
Kathleen Cahill
WHAT A PHOTO!!!! Such beauty you captured-you were meant to be there as your respect and love of Whales I’m sure was recognized by them. I hope to one day be able to swim with them as well. I hear it is an awesome and divine feeling one experiences swimming near them. Keep up the great photography! Happy Adventures!
whalegeek replied
Kathleen, thank you for your very thoughtful comments about this whale image. It is my hope that your dream of swimming with whales will come true, too. When you’re with whales, you’re bound to have a wonderful time. They never fail to amaze me.
aspectsoftmk
i would be crying my eyes out if i shared what you have with these whales….so beautiful…and so touching…
whalegeek replied
Thank you. I admit to becoming very misty-eyed when I was with these whales. It was a very emotional experience for me.
liesbeth
an encounter like this… you are so blessed..
i’ve always felt a connection with the whales since i have once seen an orca in Harderwijk Netherlands..such a huge and majestic animal, not at all belonging in a small place.. she has been transferred to america and since that there has never been a whale again in Holland.
Your pictures are beautifull and being able to get so close to them shows they trusted your group. xx
whalegeek replied
Liesbeth, thank you for sharing your orca memories with me. Whales/dolphins in captivity always leaves me feeling hollow. Thank you for taking time to comment and for writing such supportive comments.
Scott d'Almeida
awesome
whalegeek replied
Thank you, Scott. I’m still on a high from this encounter.
Tanya Snowden
Gorgeous!
whalegeek replied
Thank you, TanyaS!
Sarah Louise
This must have been such an incredible experience. I just recently got scuba certified and this is definitely something on my list of things to do. Wow….this is one event that will stick with you for a lifetime. Wonderful shot!
whalegeek replied
Thank you, Sarah, for sharing your thoughts…congrats on achieving your scuba certification. That’s wonderful, something you’ll enjoy for years to come. Normally though, one does not scuba with humpbacks. Snorkeling is okay abut scuba bubbles can be seen as a sign of aggression. Humpbacks use bubble blasts when in male competition groups so generally it’s best to just stick to snorkeling with them. I hope you do get out to spend time with these great leviathans of the deep. It’s an unforgettable experience.
Melanie Dogan
Just amazing!! I have loved these whales ever since I saw Star Trek 4 when I was a kid! I love that they sing and they’re so beautiful, gentle creatures :).. Did you see the story about the mom and her calf in Disney’s “Earth”? Great photo :)
whalegeek replied
Melanie, I’m also a fan of ST4. The whales were the stars in that film. Yes, indeed I did see the mom and calf humpback in Disney’s Earth. That film did a good job of portraying the long, perilous journey of humpbacks through vast expanses of ocean. I am in awe of whales. Happy to know you enjoyed this image!
kalaryder
Oh how I envy you this experience! A wonderful shot
whalegeek replied
kalaryder, I’m ready to go again. It was that incredible. I hope you are blessed with an in water whale experience one day soon. It fills one’s soul with such a sense of wonder. Thanks so much!
Stuart Rose
they really are such amazing, beautiful creatures arent they!!! a first class image of such a majestic animal! great job.
