U. S. Capitol West Face

Taken sunset April 2008. The Capitol is a 19th century neoclassical design, based upon the architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. The Dome is cast iron, constructed between 1855 and 1866. The Capitol was nearly ‘domeless’ as many in the Congress felt the iron could be put to better use as Civil War arms and armament, President Lincoln insisted the project go forward as a sign of the strength of the Union. The Dome is capped with the ‘Statue of Freedom’ designed by Thomas Crawford, he died in 1855 shortly after completing the initial plaster mold in his studio in Rome. The statue was cast in five sections with the final section being installed Dec. 2, 1863.
