U. S. Capitol
View of North end (Constitution Ave). The capitol is 19th century neoclassical design, based upon ancient Greek and Roman architecture. The Dome is cast iron and the building nearly was ‘Domeless’ as members of the congress felt the iron could be put to better use as arms and armament. President Lincoln prevailed, he saw the Dome and completion of the Capitol as a statement to the strength and continued unity of the Uniited States. The Dome is topped with the ‘Statue of Freedom’, designed by Thomas Crawford, cast in five sections. The final section was erected Dec., 1863.
