It never ceases to amaze me just how far we have come with technology…just take a stroll through a museum and what we thought was the “edge of technology” is now over the edge into obsolete. / However, my grandfather typed all of his personal letters on his Smith/Corona till the day he died. Said the sound of the keys kept him focused…
This is the lathe where I work. I wanted to give the entire piece a very vintage tonality accentuated by some of the more unusual Daniel Smith single pigment Primatek paints. It is painted with Daniel Smith Primatek and Rublev 18th century reproduction watercolor paint on Arches 140# cold-pressed paper. This combination of paint and paper creates some very interesting textures in this piece. The original work is 11”x14” in size. A few miles out in the country from our town is this old farm. The lady that owns the land lost her husband a few years ago. He used to repair old tractors and I guess he collected them, too. There are quite a few of them that are left to rust in the fields. Now, they make good subjects for photographers and local painters. This photo was taken with a Canon Rebel XS DSLR and edited with Dynamic-Photo HDR. /
THE SUBJECT: / Rusting old tools from a bygone age hanging on a blacksmith’s wall bathed in a golden afternoon light. / Not only are these tools not used any more but there are fewer and fewer people who know what they were used for. THE LOCATION: / This Still Life was photographed at Timbertown, an historic theme park at Wauchope, west of Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, on a lightly overcast summer day. THE MAKING of ‘On the Smithy’s Wall #2’: / The shot was made using natural light and a longish exposure from inside the Blacksmith’s shop with low diffused light washing in from the open double door. Another example of how I photograph the light and not just the subject so I can create a mood shot not a snapshot. / This is a close-up crop made from the original “On the Smithy’s Wall #1”, suggested by a fellow camera club member that you can see here if you wish. / Fuji S9600: RAW, Manual settings of f/ 8 @ 1.5sec, ISO80, Tripod, Timer. / S7RAW & Photoshop CS. Visit the Rust & Machinery collection in my BubbleSite Gallery for more ferrous oxide and decay. UPDATE: 16-9-09 / These rusty old tools have been FEATURED in the Rusty, Crusty and Falling to Bits Group. Enjoy! RUST & MACHINERY / (Click the links!) Once a very popular shopping mall, Bannister Mall fell victim to changing population and demographic patterns. It could not compete with newer malls in other parts of the city; it became crime-ridden, and gradually it lost tenants. For years, Bannister Mall stood mostly vacant, just barely hanging on. It was recently razed to the ground, and the area now lies in ruins. In Kansas City, MO. 3 exposures tone-mapped with Photomatix, with additional processing using some filters.
