This month’s feature is my very first group feature journal write-up, if it’s well received I’ll be doing more and feel free to drop me a b-mail to make a suggestion for a group that needs a closer look, you can also comment on the forum post if you prefer. This feature is about a group called Blood and Mortar / Blood and Mortar is a place for modern supernatural art and written verse. We all know the sub-culture, but do we really appreciate it for what it is? Many movies and novels have been at the forefront of developing these supernatural modern grim settings and they have become something of an enterprise on their own. / Comic books, movies, novels and video games have picked up on the sub-culture and developed it something we all know and in some cases can relate to. / The dark and often horror-oriented worlds portrayed with modern supernatural tales often tell a story based loosely in morality, but far too often in romantic pursuits. The idea of gothic-romance seems to be appealing to just about anyone, regardless of their inherent tastes in entertainment, or personal interests in life. / A good example that broke the mold early on is the famed Harry Potter novel series. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Harry Potter legacy, have you been living under a rock?! But seriously, the story focuses on a boy who is deigned to be great and the so-called savior of a secret wizard world that exists on the borders on the normal one inhabited by what they call muggles, AKA normal people. While the series of novels, that have spawned both a movie franchise and various types of games, shows the readers a whole magical world that is like an ephemeral mist around our heads, it focuses mainly on the personal and emotional experiences of the young Potter. / This is often a staple in the gritty underworld of modern magic and monstrous storyscapes. These tales manifest often as stories we would otherwise see as romance or emotionally developmental tales, but are told using mystical props and so they often appeal to a wider audience. / Even the simple thing like the monster under the bed or the boogeyman in the closet are examples of modern supernatural stories. We take these tales for granted, but who among us can say that they don’t have a deep seeded fear of the dark somewhere in the back of their minds and hearts. It’s not just the dark, or the idea of a mugger or something so trivial…it’s the unknown hidden in shadow among us that we fear and respect so much. Blood and Mortar Hosts / Great Links to Modern Supernatural research elements and entertainment, if you can think of other great modern supernatural stuff on the net, link them up in a comment, to add a text link, place quotations before and after the text and add a colon right afterwards with the URL of the link. At this time I have received a positive review from the Writer’s Literary Agency who want to represent my work for “Darkness Within”. They require that I either submit to them a critique—done by someone who has the credentials of an editor, or they will refer me to an editor for the process. After that it becomes a matter of signing a contract with the agency, that states I can fire them at any time I am not pleased with their work, and I maintain all rights from the book. As some of you may know, the work is not finished; I still have a couple of months to get from point A to point B; however I do already have the ending written out, and some of the chapters leading up to it. If any of you know someone that has the credentials of an editor that would be interested in taking the time to go over my work, and offer a critique, your services would be invaluable. The agency tells me that I am looking at spending about $70-$90 for a professional critique; and of course I am trying the doors to see if I can get an editor for less than that. If I don’t find one in the next three days, I will be going with the editor that the agency refers me to. Tor expressed interest in my work at one time, and this is something that I plan to bring to the attention of the agency-possibly I can find an editor through them, and thereby seal my chances with publication by them as well. On the other hand, if I find an editor for less than $70, I will take them up on their offer-give their credentials to the agency, and, as a side-note, mention to them that Tor was interested in my work; perhaps the agency can pull a few strings that will either get me accepted by Tor, or at the very least, offer me a rejection that I don’t have to wait 6-8 months for. Soooooo, everyone keep your fingers crossed, say your prayers to your dieties—whether they be male, female, or endrogenous; and maybe something really swell will happen, and put “Darkness Within” up on the shelf for publication…~
