After leaving Tucumcari, we headed east to San Jon, our last stop in New Mexico. San Jon is another small town on Route 66 with abandoned motels and businesses. The photo below shows a rusty sign that once glowed neon for the Western Motel. That is a 1960’s Plymouth sitting in the yard. Doubt that it runs, but someone did put a modern sun shield in the back window. As we edged into the eastern side of Glenrio, we saw our first town on the route in Texas. The first sign that there had once been life in this town was an old metal sign leaning at a 90-degree angle, almost obscured by overgrown trees and bushes. All of the signage had been blown out, but the guide book showed that it once read “Deep Rock”. Further down in the abandoned town we discovered one occupied home sitting back behind the ruins of Glenrio’s business district. Now it is surrounded by a junk yard of remnants of the once thriving town. Nearby is the Morel Café and Last Motel in Texas. In its heyday if you had driven into town from the west, you would have been that the sign read the First Motel in Texas. As you can see by the photo below the sign is barely there, probably a victim of the ravages of the storms and hail that recently hit Texas. Next stop on Route 66 was Adrian, which claims by its signage that it is the mid-point of Route 66. From Adrian it is 1,139 miles east to Chicago and 1,139 miles west to Los Angeles. I must note that the next town on the route is Vega, which disputes that and also claims to be the mid-point. However, Adrian is the one with the great looking mid-point signs and The Mid-Point Café, home of the Ugly Crust pies. We came through town right after lunch and were too full to try one of the pies, but we heard they are the best! The old town of Vega was the last cruise-through for today. We didn’t have time to stop at Dot’s Mini Museum which is touted to have a great collection of Route 66 memorabilia. There were several old signs and The Vega Motel looked like it might still be in business. A cool photo op just off of Route 66 and closer to downtown was a restored gas station from the 1920s with a green & white Magnolia Gasoline pump in front. The photo below is colorful Roosters, a Mexican restaurant. I would not recommend starting out on a Route 66 drive without a good guide or map to direct you down the road. We have two books, one with good maps that showed clearly whether the road was running on the north or south side of I-40 or if the road no longer existed. The other book listed all the towns in geographical order and recommended points of interest for each. All the guide books and maps on the market for Route 66 start in Chicago and direct you west toward the Pacific Ocean. I assume that is because this is the way that The Mother Road started out after she was born and where she finally matured out west on the Santa Monica pier. But if you are driving east on Route 66 as we are, then you have to learn to read backwards. Just kidding! But you do have to flip pages backwards in the map/guides to see which town is next on the eastern route. When we first started east, I was having a bit of a hard time figuring out where we were going next. But I soon became adept at flipping pages backward and then reading forward. If I can do it, anyone can! RECOMMENDED TRAVELING COMPANIONS (besides your loved ones): “Route 66 Adventure Handbook” (3rd Edition) by Drew Knowles / This book directs you to points of interest and attractions. Without this book, we would have missed so many amazing sights and side trips. Throw this one into the convertible before you leave home! “Route 66 Traveler’s Guide” (Collectors Edition) by Tom Snyder / This book has good maps showing where the road is in relation to I-40. It also indicates where the road no longer exists and will recommend alternate routes. Both these books can be purchased on www.amazon.com

  • George Lopez: America's Mexican

This is a review of art, because comedy is an art form, and so is not about an individual person, but about a performance which has made it to video. What this is not is a statement for, or against, illegal immigrants, legal immigrants, any certain race or ethnicity, banning persons, or etc. So let’s be clear about this: This is my personal opinion as inspired by a comedic routine by a certain performer. Now, I should tell you, first of all, that I grew up being somewhat in love with George Lopez. i found him refreshing, funny, personable, reasonable, mature, and all sorts of other things one does not generally find in a comedian. I liked his stand up acts, when I saw them on tv (I have yet to see anyone’s stand up act live), I liked his tv show. Never, in all the decades that I have been a fan of his, have I ever seen him say anything truly abrasive, mean spirited, overly shocking, horribly racist, or otherwise just nasty. Imagine my surprise, then, when I found out the performance for ‘George Lopez: America’s Mexican’ was all of those things! Not to mention treasonous, libelous, crude, juvenile, and hypocritical. Who knows? Maybe the fact that he actually is an American citizen, not one of “us” that he claims to be when he’s talking to/about illegal immigants, is supposed to be the funny part? Whatever the case, I was not amused, nor was anyone else who was watching the video with me. Nor would have been my neighbor down the road, who is also, like Mr. Lopez, an American but of Mexican descent with family here who are illegal immigrants, as well as family still in Mexico. I can say this about her because I know that she 1) Never calls me “that white woman” despite the fact that she is not white. It would never enter into her head to do so, because she is a nice, mature person who cares for people and when she judges them it is by individual merit, not by skin color or place of birth. 2) We’ve had mild discussions about the illegal immigrant situation. She says it’s hard because she is an American, she knows they are breaking the law, etc. but she also can see the point of view of persons who are here, legally or otherwise, that want to help their families. In seeing both viewpoints, we tend to agree. 3) She is respectful of authority and would never, despite that she does not vote, ever call the President a filthy name like that. Nor, in fact, would she call anyone a name like he used. 4) I know, because she told me, that she is tired of people from Mexico harassing her as to how she has to speak Spanish and should be ashamed of herself for not using it. For, as she said “I’m not Mexican, I’m American. I was born here and I speak the language of my country.” I was very insulted and shocked by this video. Some would say that is the job of art. But, remember, this was a comedian, and a comedians job is to make the audience laugh, whether the joke is on them or not. I found nothing funny about anything said in the first 15 minutes or so of the video, so I turned it off in disappointment. I feel very sorry for Mr. Lopez’ audience during that tour! Only racially prejudiced persons of Mexican descent would find anything worth hearing, I imagine. In fact, the routine, what I saw of it, reminded me more of a stand up routine ala Hitler than anything I’ve ever seen from George Lopez up to now. Unless an apology is quickly forthcoming, or has already been issued, for this terrible alleged comedic hate crime, George Lopez will go on my list with Howard Stern, Jerry Springer, Marilyn Manson, Courtney Love, Paris Hilton, Michael Jackson, Eminem, and Madonna; which list is for the sort of performers who may , indeed, have talent and some of them in more than one field, but whom have shown themselves to be so distastefully disruptive to society, and/or rude and ridiculing, and/or hypocritical, that I would never knowingly commit either my time or money, again, to being entertained by them. Though, to be fair, in Michael Jackson’s case, it is more that he appears to be a man who would have had a better life with less money and less Yes Men at his disposal.

Sometimes time gets away from me. My main objective is to paint at least 2 paintings a week till the end of the year. I started 2 new series of works in January. Garden Series-pen & ink, 4×6” drawings of the male, female, dog, cat. They are abstract in nature. I only have14 pieced done in the series and still need 10 works to complete this series. Little Secret-The Fairy Series-most of this series is oil although I did one piece in Acrylic. I have 7 paintings done since the end of February 09. 1-28×36”, 1-24×28” and 5-16×20”. One of these pieces will be hung in Gever’s Studio March 14-09 for the City Wide Luminaria Art Day. I still need to finish 3 more paintings in this series to be complete. My next series of paintings will be of the Mexican Culture dancers, Folkloric and Flaminco. I finished 2-16×20” in acrylic paint, one live on Kens5 TV. I should have 10 paintings by the end of the year in this series. I draw these dancers and paint them in watercolors most of the time and wanted to put them to canvas. If you visit my web site TheArtistDomain.bravehost.com some of these works are in my gallery.

Dia de los Muertos also known as as The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrated November 1 & 2. On these days people clean and spruce up the brightly colored cemeteries and decorate them with beautiful flowers and candles in honor of their departed loved ones. The spirits are feted at their graves with an all night vigil. The men gather, talk and drink. The women sit by the grave and pray. Strolling musicians play the favorite music of the dead, and everyone chats, eats and drinks at the graveside. At home altars are set up with marigolds, candies, fruits, breads, drinks, and other special foods and items such as clothing the loved ones might have preferred. The offerings and prayers encourage the spirits to join the living for a few hours in celebration of their memory and partake of these gifts. By the evening of November 2nd, the celebration is over and the spirits return to the land of the dead. The following day the leftover offerings are shared with friends and relatives of the still living.

  • Many many thanks to the customer who has just purchaed a mousemat on Zazzle. / Thankyou for your visit to my store! Selection of açi biber (chilli peppers) arranged by colour. The idea came to me after calling one of my flower photographs a ‘colour wheel’ ....strange the way inspiration takes you! In Turkey these frey little gems are dried to make ‘pul biber’ which is sprinked on food/soup, nibbled as a dried pepper with bbq type meals, ground to a paste for addition to casseroles or pickled as a side dish. Whatever way you eat them they are seriously addictive and not for the faint hearted. / Chili pepper (chilli pepper, chilli, chili, chile) is the fruit of the plants from the genus Capsicum, members of the nightshade family, Solanaceae. Botany considers the plant a berry bush. Though chilis may be thought of as a vegetable, their culinary use is generally as a spice. It is the fruit that is usually harvested. Chili peppers and their cultivars originate in the Americas; they are now grown around the world because they are widely used as spices or vegetables in cuisine, and as medicine. I came home today and found Medusssa had shed her skin… Amazing! / She had been in the process of preecdysis, which means preparing to shed, her skin became dull and her eyes turned a strange matt blue colour. She withdrew and appeared to need her space and took to her little cave to be alone… Rather than have contact… / She did however feed, and pretty ravenously too, which was a relief as I read some don’t eat for weeks during this time… / Afterwards, she became her captivating and extremely sociable self, showing off her shiny new skin, compelling me to take her in my hands and spend time with her… / I’m so proud of her… it’s akin to a babys’ first word or step… ;-) I am thoroughly enjoying her, and she seems to be quite enamoured avec moi… / So, all is well!
