A large formation of Lava rock off the coast of Kihei on Maui, Hawaii turned into a boiling sinking cauldron by the rising tides flowing in from above and below. The water level on this cauldron would rise and fall as much as 6 feet with the ebb and flow of the waves. I was fascinated by this marvel of nature and creation.

It is a rare occasion when there is no wind blowing the palms, and there are enough clouds over the ocean to create a dramatic sunset at this location. I spent a week’s worth of evenings in this area before the conditions set up perfectly. Technically this is a series of 5 long exposures layered. I was using a 10mm lens on my little Canon XTi. It worked. This beach is in an area where there will soon be plenty of new construction, sadly. The “old” Maui is slipping away, and it breaks my heart. I hope images like this will preserve the pristine flavor for future generations.

Maluaka is a place on Maui where there is a comforting daily cloud cover reaching out from the high slopes of Mt. Haleakala and extending toward the island of Kaho’olawe . Without this protective cloud, the scorching equatorial sun would be relentless. I noticed this sunset beginning to happen, and I grabbed my gear and sprinted to the rocky Maluaka coastline just in time to make a nice capture.

As I crawled from my tent with blurred eyes, I could see that the sun was going to rise perfectly behind Alau Island. This image was unplanned, yet a perfectly wonderful stroke of luck.

A beautiful wave crashes into the shores of Hawaii. This was an excellent day for shooting just empty waves and I managed to get quite a few dramatic looking shots, this one was my favorite from this day.

A color sunset as the tides roll in near Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii.

This photograph is a sunrise shot taken at Halona Cove on O’ahu’s eastern shore. The sun appeared to be rising straight out of Haleakala or “House of the Sun” on Maui. Halona Cove is also known as “From Here to Eternity” Beach. This is the location where Deborah Kerr and Burt Lancaster embraced in the surf in a memorable, steamy scene from the movie of that title. Canon 30D, EF 18-55 lens, polarizer.

American White Ibis, Eudocimus albus is a species of wading bird of the ibis family Threskiornithidae which occurs from the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States south through most of the New World tropics. It occurs in marshy wetlands and pools near the coast. It also occurs on mowed grass, lawns, and has become common in some city parks, where it can be found feeding alone or with other Ibis. It builds a stick nest in trees, bushes, or over water, and 2 to 5 eggs are typically laid. White ibises are monogamous and colonial, usually nesting in mixed colonies with other wading species. This ibis feeds by probing with its long, downcurved beak. Its diet consists of various fish, frogs and other water creatures, as well as insects and small reptiles. Adults are 65 cm long with a 95 cm wingspan. They have all-white plumage except for black wingtips (visible in flight) and reddish bills and legs. The red bill blends into the face of breeding birds; non-breeding birds show a pink to red face. Juveniles are largely brown with duller bare parts; they are distinguished from the Glossy and White-faced Ibises by white underparts and rumps. Over all both sexes look alike. Like the other species of ibis, the White Ibis flies with neck and legs outstretched, often in long, loose lines. The song of the male is an advertising hunk-hunk-hunk-hunk. The female squeals. When feeding, the birds often give a soft, grunting croo, croo, croo as they forage. So this little known place is probably the closest I will ever get to tropical paradise. Its called Wayag, and is a group of Islands off the Western Coast of West Papua in Indonesia. Its quite a story about how I got here (i hope to write it up some time soon), but I want to pay full credits to my friend Simon Mammino for his assistance in getting this shot.
