To date I have photographed around 250 species of Australian wildlife (including more than 220 species of birds!). All found and photographed in the wild over the last few years. click here to view the list of species Yet I consider myself a novice ‘birder’ and don’t even use binoculars to help me locate species. Recipe: research + petrol + walking + luck! (add in some flies, dust and corrugated roads for good measure) To me there are few things more satisfying than travelling and exploring new places then finding new species to add to my photo collection. Australia has such an amazing variety of wildlife out there! Our travels have included wetlands, coastal areas, mallee scrub, woodland and forests. Day trips or longer trips that can see us camping and ‘roughing it’ for a few days at a time. I love it – each trip is a bit of an adventure. hmm well the Blue Jay sega still continues. I set out whole peanuts yesterday and within a few hours he proceeded to give me supreme heck for sitting on my deck in the evening. He wanted the peanuts but wouldn’t come down while i was there. Then this morning he stayed away until i left my post long enough to get ready for the day. While i was preoccupied he swooped in and stole two peanuts. I may set up the tripod and use the remote to get the shot lol. The sega continues…. will post when i get the shot.. I hope

Around Twelve last night a friend of mine stopped by. I have had a lot of halloweeny ideas floating around my head. I just needed a model and a good amount of extension cords. A pitchfork acted as my light stand, an old drop light as my lighting, and the faded side of an old gas can was my diffuser. No black cats or fall colors for me this Halloween. No, I went straight for the darker side of frightful October. Hangings and graves….heck, even hanging graves. We’ve had this head stone in our yard for almost 20 years now. I believe one of my aunts found it in a ditch. There is no visible name on it, so We were never able to identify where it came from. I thought I would put it to some artistic use at the very least. So, I spent about 3 hours working with this damp cold dark studio. I could do better, but by 3 AM you really lose some self expectation. We tried a number of different things, but ultimately staying still for 30 seconds in a noose is not the easiest thing to do. / You almost HAVE to put weight in the rope to stay still. This immediately chokes you of both blood and oxygen. Some of the longer half minutes of my life thus far I must admit. Overall it was a fun and interesting shoot.

As some of you may know Outdoor Photographer has been holding there “favorite places” contest. Last night I found out that my photo is 1 out of 60 finalists. Originally there was over 4000 entries and only 60 were picked to be finalists. My photo Yosemite Lightning Strike http://www.redbubble.com/people/nolann/art/1016769-2-yosemite-lightning-strike is currently in the lead in views with 13600 views and is in second place in the people choice voting! Im am super excited! Cant wait to see the final results June 15th! You can see my photo in the Outdoor Photographer finalist gallery here-http://www.outdoorphotographer.com/photo-contests/2009-yfp-contest/finalists.html / Its the second one down on the left. On a related note, I found out about this last night around 1-2am so needless to say I didnt get much sleep. Day two with hardly any sleep at all. But I still managed to wake up early and go hiking in the Sierra backcountry and found an amazing lake for photos that I had never been to. The light was mediocre but I will definitly be spending some time backpacking up there soon for some shots. Where you ask? We you will just have to wait and see until I the photos I have planned. mmmmmm sleeeeep
