  • Masking - It's more than black and white - Photoshop Tutorial

We all know about masking – White Reveals, Black Conceals or Hide All (Black) Reveal All (White). So what about the other 253 shades/tones inbetween, have we forgotten about them, and how can they benefit us. We can use masks to precisely perform an adjustment/filter/effect on an image, but also use it to give varying degrees of the adjustment to certain parts of an image. Think of it in terms of 255=white 100% revealed 128=grey 50% revealed or 50% hidden, whichever way to want to look at it .. and 0=black 100% concealed. It’s all those different shades inbetween that can add an extra dimension to an image – or as Chris Orwig likes to say “Subtle, yet Significant” You can borrow my image to practise on if you like, copyright is mine etc., Open the image and duplicate the b/ground layer by pressing Ctrl + J on the keyboard or dragging the layer to the create new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette. Take a few moments to look at the image (your image, if you have one of yours open) and really think what you want to do with it and where you want the viewers attention to be focused. In my image I’d like to hit some of the b/ground with a Gaussian Blur to increase the shallow Depth of field. I’d also like to do something with the green stem sitting right in front of the flower. Cloning it out might be a pain in the bum, so using some of the Gaussian Blur on that might be a good idea. I’d also like to take the back petals a bit more out of focus, but not a great deal. You can do all that on one mask using different greys as well as the standard black & white that we associate with masking. Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur and I’m going to hit this with a 10 px blur – you might want to choose something lower or higher. Hold down the Alt key and then click on the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the layers palette, you will be presented with a black mask (hide all). Make sure the f/ground colour is set to white and choose a soft edged brush and start painting over the b/ground area. Zoom in and out as necessary Ctrl + the plus key to zoom in – Ctrl + the minus key to zoom out. Hold down the spacebar to temporarily get the hand to move around the image. If you make any mistakes while doing this, simply hit the X key on the keyboard to get black (provided your b/ground colour is black) and paint over to fix. You may end up with something like the image below. You can also check on your painting abilities by holding down the Alt Key and clicking on the layer mask. See image below. Hold down the Alt key and click on the layer mask to go back to the normal view. You can paint directly on the mask to make sure you have everything selected. Lets have a look at that two petals at the back of the flower. I don’t want them to be waaay out of focus like the b/ground, so I’m going to try a 50% neutral grey i.e. 128, 128, 128. Bring up the Colour Picker and in the RGB section use 128 for each of them. Paint over the two petals behind the flower. Your layer mask will now look something like the image below Okay, now lets deal with the leaf thing. I don’t want the blur effect completely revealed like the b/ground and I don’t want it as subtle as the petals, so lets try a darker grey. Bring up the colour picker again and in the RGB boxes try 200 and paint over the stem/leaf thing. Your mask might be looking similar to the image below. We really need to do something about the bright green. Click on the little ying yang symbol at the bottom of the layers palette and choose Hue/Saturation from the menu. Choose greens from the drop down menu at the top of the dialogue box. Use the eyedropper tool to select one of the greens, then use the eyedropper with a + sign next to it to add some various shades. Take the saturation slider all the way down to -100. Click OK to accept that change and then click on the white layer mask and press Ctrl + i to invert it (black – hide all) Open the colour Picker (by clicking on the f/ground colour) and pick 64-64-64 for the RGB colours – paint over the stem/leaf. Change the f/ground to a neutral grey 128-128-128 and paint over the b/ground area. Your layer mask might look something like the one below. Create a new Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, and this time just increase the Saturation by +15 on the Master. Click on the white layer mask and then use Ctrl + i to invert it. I used a white brush to paint over the main flower petals and then took the layer opacity down to 50%. You can carry on doing this to your hearts content, at the end of the day you will probably want to sharpen selective areas as well. You’re going to do a Stamp Visible (you may want to phone a friend to help with this keyboard shortcut) Make sure the topmost layer is selected, then Ctrl + Shift + Alt + E will place all the layers below in to one single layer, whilst still retaining the layers below. If you adjust the layers below, the adjustment will not be visible on the Stamped layer. Once you’ve done that, duplicate the layer and change the blend mode to Overlay. Go to Filter>Other>High Pass and choose a radius of 3 pixels. Hold down the Alt key and click on the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the layers palette. The mask will be Black (Hide All) Go about the business of selecting various shades of grey – white etc., to bring some areas into sharper focus than others. Just to finish off this image you may want to create a new selective colour adjustment layer and choose whites from the drop down menu – make sure Absolute is checked at the bottom of the dialogue box. Move the Yellow slider to about +10, click OK and then click on the layer mask and press Ctrl + i to invert it. Use a white brush to take out some of the glaring white areas and then take the layer down to 75%. And there you have it. You will probably take much more care than I have. Have fun!

OK, many people ask me how I get my black and white photos done, and most of the time I try my hardest to explain it all through a reply email. But recently a bubbler bubblemailed me and asked, so THIS time I figured I’d draw one up. So 4 hours later and I think Im done. WARNING: LARGE LARGE LARGE FILE!! WILL TAKE A WHILE TO DOWNLOAD But once downloaded, I suggest that you right-click and SAVE, so you dont have to come back each time. =) And another thing – sorry if there is incorrect spelling, punctuation etc. I didnt read over it! OKIE DOKIE – so for starters, pick a image you would like to turn into black and white. Ive made this tut to suit a portrait photo. You can do it with landscape, etc. Just with some common knowledge of where to edit and put things. Shouldn’t be too hard! So here is my orginal: / This is a photo of my mate Tristan. Pretty plain photo of him sitting in the car, on our way to the races. =) HERE WE GO! WOO-LAH! I also just edit to get rid of his moles, etc. That might be my next tutorial – haha! Hope this helps guys! Feel free to comment if you need help etc. I’ll try and do my best to answer them for you!

Sleep is but a distant memory so I decided to look through some of the thousands of photos in my computer. I stumbled across the photo shoot that I did with my girls in the October school holidays. I had set up a studio in my loungeroom at home and the girls dressed up and posed for the camera. We had a ball as Axel would keep running into the shot or taking off with the tripod. These are a couple of the images from that day. There are tears streaming down my face as I remember this day with laughter and smiles…

Today Fleur and I made our pinhole match box cameras and set off to try them out. I was using old b & w but Fleur was using old colour print film. This evening I went for it with the coffee developer and actually came up with some images. I searched out a few recipes but made mine up in the end. It is like magic. Even though my scanner is not designed to cope with bad negatives we have these to show. I have learnt a few things about light proofing my matchbox and I’m ready to run out and get some more b & w film and coffee. What fun! and now for the biscuit tin, paper and coffee pictures

I made this image for a challenge which consisted in creating A hand-made sunrise, sunset or sunbeam or storm work. After uploading it to my portfolio, with some details as to how it was created, I was asked to post the tutorial in a Photoshop oriented forum. So there it is in a more detailed version. I hope that you will find it useful. Please do not hesitate to signal any mistake you might find or ask for clarification if you find some point confusing. This is the modified image: / I started with a not so interesting colour photo which presented a nice dense cloudy sky, and the trees in the foreground was dim and more in silhouette. It was shot at sunset, so the sky was not too bright, just enough to show a good definition in the clouds and suggest the presence of ozone in the atmosphere. My original photo was 3872×2592 pixels. The size of the photo is important to mention in this case because you might have to adjust the different values depending on your image size. Original image / If you prefer, you can use my original photo by right clicking on the link and saving to your computer. Link to original photo STEP 1 – CONVERT TO BLACK AND WHITE / I used a tutorial published by Design by Fire . It had been originally created by the photographer Greg Gorman’s photo retoucher, Rob Carr. If you decide to use this tutorial, please note that in Photoshop 6, you have to convert image mode back to 8 bits prior to step 4 where you need to Ctrl+Click (Windows) on the thumbnail of the Channels palette to load a selection, or else it won’t work. I don’t know how it is for other versions; you will have to try. For this image, I chose a greenish tone for my solid color adjustment layer in step 6, picking my colour at left, near the bottom of the color picker as shown in the tutorial (theirs is in a red palette instead of green). STEP 2 – CREATING RAIN After converting my image to a nice and rich black and white, I used another interesting tutorial that I found on the internet to create rain. This great and easy tutorial was made by Domen Lombergar and if you wish, you can view his tutorial on video right here However, I will write below each step of the tutorial anyway, entering the settings that I have used for this particular image. 1. You should now have a nice black and white image to start with. 2. Add a new layer, name it Rain and fill it with black. 3. Now we need to add noise. Go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise and enter 400% in the amount value. You may have to enter more if your image is larger or less if your image is smaller. Check either Uniform or Gaussian, it doesn’t matter, but make sure that the box Monochromatic is checked. Click OK. 4. Go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur and play with the angle and distance until you are satisfied. In this instance, I chose a negative angle value of -41 , and a distance of 61 pixels . 5. I adjusted the opacity to 34% (may vary according to taste and to background image) and blended in screen mode. 6. The next thing was to create an adjustment layer on the background image (between the background and the rain layers) to darken the background a little and match the atmosphere. 7. I finished the rain process by cropping the blurred edges out, leaving me with image approximately 3780 by 2500 pixels in size. STEP 3 – CREATING A LIGHTNING BOLT For the last step, I created a lightning bolt using a great tutorial by Matthew Whiting 1. You need to start your lightning in a new document with the background set to transparent. My rainy black and white image was a little more that 2500 px high, and I figured that my lightning bolt would run from the little hole in the clouds to the bottom, meaning a little more than half of the height. Just to be sure, I made my new document a transparent square of 1500×1500 pixels. 2. Now you will fill it with a gradient. To do so, make sure that your default colours are set to black and white by hitting the D key. Then, pick your Gradient tool from the tools menu and in the horizontal menu at the top of your screen, choose a black to white gradient, making certain that the Linear gradient option is selected. Holding the Shift key, trace a straight horizontal line accross the layer, starting at about ¼ of the document and stopping at ¾. Placing a grid on your document could help you gauge where to start and finish, if you’re not sure. To do this, go to Edit > Preferences > Guides and Grid . In the Grid section, put 25 in the box marked Gridline every: , change the measuring units to %* , and write *0 in Subdivisions. Click OK then go to View > Show and select Grid . This is really useful as well to assess the rule of thirds. In that case, you just change the percentage to 33,3 in the Guides and Grid preferences. Back to the lightning now! 3. Now that you have a nice gradient, apply a Difference Clouds filter by clicking Filter > Render > Difference Clouds. 4. Your bolt is starting to show, but it is black and you need to change it to white. To do so, just hit Ctrl+i (Windows) or (Cmd+i in Mac) in order to invert the image. You could also use the command Image > Adjust < Invert . 5. Adding a Levels adjustment layer , you will push the black cursor to the right, mine was pushed to about 170 and slide the gamma (gray) triangle to the right as well, next to the white one which must remain at 255. Again, you might want to vary a bit according to your own image. 6. Select the image and go to Edit > Copy Merged, then paste into your rainy black and white photo, place into appropriate position, and blend in screen mode. 7. Now is the time to modify the general shape of the bolt if you find it too wavy. To do this, make sure that the bolt layer is active in the Layers palette and go to Edit > Transform > Distort . Pull the handle up to elongate the bolt a bit and or pull the sides in a bit if you wish. Apply your transformation when satisfied. 8. Should you wish to add little branches to your bolt, you can do so by selecting some that are sticking out and either cut or copy to a new layer, then position to taste. You can do this and reverse them horizontally to put some on the other side too. 9. When your bolt is shaped to your liking, use the eraser tool set at 0 hardness and 45 % opacity to slowly erase the extra blur around the bold and any remaining clouds (from the difference clouds step) that you don’t want. 10. Adjust levels again if needed. THE LAST STEP! – GLOWING LIGHT Finally, the lightning bolt needs some surrounding light to look realistic. 1. Create a new transparent layer, right under the rain layer at the top. 2. Select a large soft and round brush of 279 px and hardness set to 0, and adjust the Brush Dynamics to fade in size and opacity (I used 70 steps for size and 100 steps for opacity). 3. Make sure that white is the foreground colour in your default colours, select it and paint over the lightning bolt, starting from the bottom and going up to the originating point. 4. Apply a gaussian blur filter (I used 160 radius) and fix opacity to your liking. If you wish, you can add a spot of additional light at the point where the lightning bolt originates from the clouds using the same method as for the addition of glowing light along the bolt. 1. Create a new transparent layer, right under the rain layer at the top. 2. Select a large soft and round brush of 279 px and hardness set to 0, and apply a dot of white at the appropriate point. 3. Apply a gaussian blur filter (I used 160 radius) and fix opacity to your liking. Voilà! You should now have a great stormy landscape! I hope that I have not confused you too much. Have fun!

“Innkeeper! Two more bottles of your best saké!” the Samurai yelled, his voice deep and guttural. He was a solid man, broad of shoulder with a jaw that could have been carved out of solid oak, framed by a pair of wild sideburns. He reclined with his legs akimbo and a large grin on his face. As the innkeeper shuffled in with the saké, the door to the inn slid slowly open. “Welcome monk” the innkeeper said graciously, as he motioned his hand towards an empty table opposite the Samurai “We don’t see too much of your kind in here”. As the monk took a seat and removed his domed, straw hat, the samurai raised his glass. As is typical of his kind, the Buddhist monk appeared to be almost indistinguishable from his brethren. A sombre bald head protruding from orange robes. Apart from the innkeeper, the samurai and the monk, the inn was empty, and the samurai was in a talkative mood. “Can I fix you anything monk?” the innkeeper asked. “Tea please” the monk replied solemnly, after which the samurai roared to life. “I will have nothing of it! Innkeeper, set my friend up with a bottle of saké!” “I apologise, I must refuse your generous offer Samurai, for I do not drink alcohol” “Ah don’t be so formal! Celebrate with me! Soon my comrades will return to join the party! Tonight we celebrate, for tomorrow we become rich men! Hahaha” “Oh, how so?” The Samurai walked over and planted his imposing frame down at the monk’s table “I shouldn’t tell you this, but I can see that you’re a man of honour like myself. Have you heard of Okami Shiro?” “I think not” “I didn’t think you would have, being a monk, but amongst warriors like myself he is the stuff of legend! Listen and while we wait for my friends, I shall tell you a tale that would make even the hair on your bald head stand on end!” The samurai leant forward as if telling a secret. It was clear to the monk that he had rehearsed the telling of this tale, at least in his head. “Many years ago, Okami Shiro was an illustrious General, who presided over the lion’s share of our lord’s armies. He was as cunning as a fox and ferocious in battle. However, despite his rank he remained humble and was honourable at heart. He rarely spoke to anyone outside of his ranks and was regarded as eccentric by most people in the Lord’s court. However, on the battlefield… his skill and strategy were second to none my friend! Why even now, some soldiers have taken to engraving his name on their swords before going into battle! Are you sure I cannot interest you in some saké?” “No thank you, please allow me to pour you some though” The monk politely poured some saké into a small ceramic cup and passed it to the Samurai, head bowed. “This warrior you speak of, he sounds like a great man” “Indeed he was, and what’s more he wielded the greatest sword ever crafted by mankind! The sword of the white lotus. Rumour has it that it was made by the legendary sword maker Kazumi Tanaka himself over 200 years ago. Tanaka made this sword with a special purpose, to reap vengeance on the man who murdered his wife. He went missing soon afterwards, but ever since then the sword has been said to contain both a terrible curse and a terrible power.” “Oh and what happened to the noble warrior who wielded this sword?” “He fell in love” the samurai’s tone changed “It is said that love makes fools of even the greatest men and this is surely the case here. The great Okami Shiro was felled not by a warrior’s sword, but by a woman. And not just any woman, for she was the Lord’s niece!” “Oh my!” “Indeed. For a while they managed to hide their relationship from prying eyes. But love made Okami careless, he lost the focus he was renown for and was eventually caught out. As you know, our Lord is a conservative man, he was furious and put a 10,000 ryo bounty on the heads of both Shiro Okami and his niece. The couple fled into the mountains and were never seen again, at least not until a few days ago anway.” “You saw them?” “I killed them!” The monk recoiled, aghast. The samurai leant back and bellowed into the kitchen “Innkeeper! More saké!” Seconds later the innkeeper appeared, carrying a bottle of saké on a thin black tray. The Samurai continued with his story “I have been tracking them for some time. Finally, after a chance discussion with the local fishmonger I discovered that a middle-aged woman who appeared to be of noble blood was occasionally seen in the marketplace. They say she was sometimes accompanied by a man in his 60’s with a large mop of snowy white hair! For weeks I waited at the markets until finally I saw her. The Lord’s niece! She was older and dressed as a peasant, but you can’t hide a proper upbringing under dirty cloth! I followed her back to a secluded shack in the mountains. Later that night, I returned with my comrades, Sasaki, Koyama and Akimoto. All three skilled swordsman and Yojimbo like myself.” “And the four of you faced this great legend in combat?” “Err, not quite. While the couple slept we set fire to their home, then it was a simple matter of slaying them as they exited, unarmed and blinded by the smoke. .. But it matters not! Tomorrow, the man you are looking at will be 2,500 ryo richer! My friends have just gone to organise horses for the ride home and embalming for the heads. We do not want to smell like rotting corpses on the ride back to imperial palace!” “You are very fortunate Samurai. I have not been so lucky today.” The monk replied. “How’s that? Did someone stain your robes? Hahaha!” “In a way. I returned home from the monastery this afternoon on the eve of my parent’s anniversary, only to find our home burnt and my parents brutally murdered.” The Samurai gasped and breathed in some saké, he coughed and spluttered violently but the monk continued his tale seemingly without noticing. “My father grew to hate war in his old age. Still, a part of the soldier remained. He took precautions. He hid his legendary sword in the woods near his home and trained his only son in it’s use since he was old enough to hold a stick.” The samurai regained his composure and stared at the monk, entranced. “After retrieving my father’s sword I tracked down the Yojimbo who were responsible. I found one bartering with a farmer for horses. I killed him. Two more I found in a nearby merchants hut, they died just as easily.” The samurai stumbled to his feet and drew his sword, his entire body livid with rage “You! I’ll kill you!” “I think not, for I already killed you ten minutes ago” the monk slowly reached into his sleeve and produced a small empty vial marked ‘Fugu’ (blowfish). As if on cue the samurai’s hands started twitching, he dropped his sword and clutched his throat “Ack! You demon!” he sputtered painfully as he fell to the floor with a heavy thud. The monk took the remaining half bottle of saké and poured it over the samurai’s twitching body. He looked into the Samurai’s rage filled eyes and stated calmly “A dishonourable death for a dishonourable man.” As the monk turned calmly and walked outside, he noticed the innkeeper standing shocked in the corner. The innkeeper noticed something too, barely visible, buried beneath the robes of the monk was a sword. The sword of a legend…

Well folks, what a day ! As we posted last night – the ‘winner’ of the black and white category was found not to own the image. We have subsequently been in touch with the owner of the image and have invited him to join RedBubble and be recognized for his image . This leaves us with a prize giving dilemma – We’ve discussed this and decided that the fair solution is to grant Sharad, the owner of the image one of the runners up prizes, as he had not actually ‘entered’ the competition under the rules. We will re-consider all the runners up and award the Leica prize to one of the runners up on Monday. James.

Pencils made from old CD cases, or car parts, bags made from sweet packets, mousemats from circuit boards (they were fantastic) and, um, cacti. Which I think had always been cacti. They also had this W.E.E.E. chap, (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment) 3.3 tonnes of things incredibly well designed to be obsolete soon enough, apparently that’s what an average human throws out in a year. He was massive and his teeth were made from old computer mice. The gardens had hundreds of secret pathways leading to sandpits and restaurants and sculptures, which was quite fun, but wandering through banana groves, cashew nut trees, swamps, 60m palms, waterfalls and horseradish trees in the humidity of the dome, without really being too aware of the covering was the best. I mean, you can look up and go ‘Oh no way, I am not in the Brazillian rainforest, I am at the bottom end of England in a massive greenhouse.’ but you’re only spoiling your own fun. The food available was equally superb. I actually half went to see The Raconteurs, who were playing at The Eden Sessions that happen every year. Yes, I know they aren’t as good as The White Stripes, whom I’m slightly obsessive over, but their albums are 50/50 and you have to see a band before you can write them off completely. As it happens it all looked so damn cool everywhere, I could barely focus on the gig. But for those of you who were appalled at their second album, well, it makes a bit more sense live. Anyway, this isn’t a story, and it doesn’t have a point, but if you happen to be anywhere near the south west of England, pop in, get yourself a biro that used to be a Playstation.

Yesterday Teer Wayde and I hit the town for a coffee and quick photo shoot. Basically, we mucked around trying things for an hour or so… then we discussed giant fish. And then I lost my glasses and went stumbling back through the city to find them. Here are a few of my favourite shots from the evening. Enjoy :) / / / / / / / /
